Corporate America's debt load is nearing $10 trillion, a record 47% of the overall economy — and experts around the world are sounding the alarm

  • US corporate debt has swelled to nearly $10 trillion, according to data recently cited by the Washington Post.
  • That comes out to roughly 47% of the overall economy, which is a record, WaPo found.
  • Experts from the International Monetary Fund to trillion-dollar asset manager BlackRock are warning of the risk posed by ballooning investment-grade debt.
  • Following the 2008 financial crisis, companies have issued record-levels of bonds to investors amid historically low interest rates.

US corporations are sitting on nearly $10 trillion in debt. That's equivalent to roughly 47% of the overall economy, which is a record, according to date first cited by the Washington Post

Since the financial crisis in 2008, corporations have splurged on debt amid historically cheap borrowing costs. In recent months, experts have warning that ballooning corporate debt could worsen a future economic downturn.

Here's what experts from the International Monetary Fund to trillion-dollar asset manager BlackRock are saying about rising corporate debt.

Read more: For 30 years, Renaissance Technologies achieved 66% annualized returns. Here's how a group of academics with no trading experience became the most successful hedge fund in history.

International Monetary Fund

Reuters

As central banks around the world have loosened monetary policy over the last decade, corporations have felt encouraged to pursue "financial risk-taking," according to a report from the IMF published in October.

That dynamic has made some systemically-important economies more vulnerable to an economic slowdown, the report found.

"Corporate leverage can also amplify shocks, as corporate deleveraging could lead to depressed investment and higher unemployment, and corporate defaults could trigger losses and curb lending by banks," the IMF wrote.

In a recession half as severe as the 2008 financial crisis corporate debt-at-risk — which is owned by firms that can't cover interest expenses with their profits — could increased to $19 trillion, or almost 40% of total corporate debt in major economies, the IMF said.

BlackRock

Thomson Reuters

The trillion-dollar asset manager said in a report in October that BBB-rated bonds, the lowest bracket of the investment-grade debt, now accounts for more than 50% of the market compared to 17% in 2001.

As demand for investment-grade debt has grown, the creditworthiness of issuers has fallen. According to BlackRock, leverage levels are creeping toward the highest readings since 1992. The firm measured leverage using a ratio of debt minus cash and cash equivalents to twelve-month EBITDA.

"We believe the sharp increase in the proportion of BBB-rated constituents has made the investment-grade bond sector riskier than in recent years," BlackRock wrote. "BBB-rated bonds are typically the most vulnerable of all investment-grade debt in a recession."

If BBB-rated bonds are downgraded, they would then be considered high-yield debt, or "fallen angels." That could cause the value of the issues to fall, the firm added.

Federal Reserve

Reuters

The central bank warned in its November Financial Stability Report that the riskiest companies have accounted for the bulk of rising debt in recent years.

The Fed also expressed concern about outstanding BBB-rated debt approaching an all-time high.

"In an economic downturn, widespread downgrades of bonds to speculative-grade ratings could lead investors to sell the downgraded bonds rapidly, increasing market illiquidity and downward price pressures in a segment of the corporate bond market known already to exhibit relatively low liquidity," the central bank wrote.

The ratio of debt-to-assets for all publicly-traded nonfinancial companies has hit its highest level in two decades, and the leverage ratio among debt-heavy firms is near a historical high, the Fed added.

Open Banking 101: How Financial Institutions Can Take Advantage of a Global Movement

Posted: 02 Dec 2019 10:00 AM PST

Open banking, which has been implemented in the U.K., involves sharing customers' financial information electronically and securely, but only under conditions that customers approve.

Open banking forces lenders to offer a digital "fire hose" of data that any third party can use to get standardised access — provided the startup is registered with the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the customer agrees to share their data.

This system has already taken root in the U.K., but it could soon spread to the rest of the world. That's why Business Insider Intelligence has put together a report called Open Banking 101: How Financial Institutions Can Take Advantage of a Global Movement to Collaborate with Partners and Developers.

These are the 25 most powerful militaries in the world in 2019 and there's a clear winner — for now

  • The US is locked in an escalating face-off with top rivals Russia and China. But head-to-head comparisons of military strength are hard to come by.
  • Comparing the power of conventional military forces is quite complicated, which is part of what makes the annual Global Firepower rankings so noteworthy.

The US is locked in an escalating face-off with top rivals Russia and China. But head-to-head comparisons of military strength are hard to come by — which is what makes the Global Firepower annual rankings so noteworthy.

Their 2019 Military Strength Ranking draws on more than 55 factors to assign a Power Index score to 137 countries — adding Moldova this year. (Global Firepower appears to have changed its methodology from that of previous lists the 2019, yielding different index numbers.)

The ranking assesses the diversity of each country's weapons and pays particular attention to their available manpower. Geography, logistical capacity, available natural resources, and the status of local industry are also considered.

Recognized nuclear powers receive a bonus, but their nuclear stockpiles are not factored into the score. Landlocked countries are not docked for lacking a navy, but countries with navies are penalized if their fleets lack diversity. (Helicopter carriers are included alongside traditional fleet carriers in Global Firepower's ranking.)

NATO countries get a slight bonus because the alliance theoretically shares resources, but in general, a country's current political and military leadership was not considered (though financial health and stability are).

The top power index score is 0.0000, which is "realistically unattainable," according to Global Firepower. The closer they are to this number, the more powerful their military is.

Per these criteria, these are the 25 most powerful militaries in the world:

Kroger is getting into the meal delivery business.

The nation's largest traditional grocer said Monday that it has partnered with Indianapolis-based startup ClusterTruck to open delivery-only kitchens, also known as "dark" or "ghost" kitchens, in Indianapolis, Columbus, and Denver.

Here's what we know about the new concept, called Kroger Delivery Kitchen.

The kitchens will prepare and deliver restaurant-style meals and "change the way Americans access freshly prepared meals," Kroger said in a news release.

Kroger

"The way our customers order and receive meals is evolving, and ClusterTruck's innovative culinary and digital design is cracking the code for the future of profitable meal delivery," said Yael Cosset, Kroger's chief information officer.

Kroger will not charge delivery or service fees, making it cheaper than other delivery options such as Uber Eats.

Kroger

"Kroger Delivery Kitchen Powered by ClusterTruck will allow our customers to access restaurant-quality fresh and delicious meals like never before and without having to pay excessive service or delivery fees," Cosset said.

ClusterTruck software uses algorithms to optimize operations, which ensure orders are delivered within seven minutes of preparation, Kroger said. Meals are delivered within 30 minutes of ordering, on average.

Flight delays plague travelers as the season's first nor'easter hits the East Coast. At least 9 people have died due to the winter weather.

Winter storm forecast 12-2National Weather Service/NOAA

  • A winter storm has created travel woes for Americans returning home after the Thanksgiving holiday.
  • Snow is expected to continue through Tuesday in the Northeast: On Monday evening, Philadelphia and Boston are expected to get up to 6 inches, and parts of New Jersey could see up to 1 foot.
  • Over the weekend, freezing rain across vast swaths of the US was linked to at least 7 deaths. Two people were killed in Canada as well.
  • Airports including LaGuardia, Newark, and Boston Logan are experiencing a high percentage of delays. As of Monday morning, inbound flights to Newark were delayed at their origin airport on Monday morning by an average of 3 hours.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

A severe winter storm foiled many post-Thanksgiving travel plans over the weekend, as snow, rain, and freezing rain fell in California, the Pacific Northwest, the Rocky Mountains, the upper Midwest, and New England.

The snow is expected to continue in parts of the Northeast through Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Watch these unsettling videos of all the times Tesla autopilot drivers were caught asleep at the wheel in 2019

Posted: 02 Dec 2019 09:48 AM PST

tesla autopilotBeck Diefenbach / Reuters

  • Tesla's semiautonomous Autopilot feature has led to an alarming, if rare trend: drivers falling asleep at the wheel.
  • In 2019, a record number of videos surfaced of Tesla drivers seemingly asleep on the highway while Autopilot kept their car moving at high speeds.
  • Tesla's autopilot has drawn controversy for its involvement in several crashes, some of which have been fatal — but Tesla argues that the feature makes drivers safer overall.
  • These videos taken by other drivers throughout 2019 show the unnerving moments they noticed they were sharing the road with Teslas whose drivers were asleep at the wheel.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Most of the videos follow the same formula: Cell phone footage shot on a highway shows a Tesla driver reclining in their seat, hands not on the wheel. As the person filming the video passes them, it becomes clear that the Tesla driver isn't even awake: "I think this guy is, like, passed out in his Tesla."

Tesla's semiautonomous Autopilot feature has led to an alarming new genre of viral videos in 2019: Drivers sleeping at the wheel while their Tesla barrels down the highway.

The trend has been heavily documented in recent months — in The New York Times Magazine, Peter Baker described the ominous sensation of watching a "human lulled to sleep inside a hunk of metal and glass, hurtling down a highway under the control of proprietary algorithms beamed on board from Palo Alto."

Tesla has insisted that the feature makes drivers safer, and a Bloomberg survey last month found that over 90% of Model 3 owners agree. The company also says drivers must keep their hands on the wheel and pay attention to the road while driving on Autopilot — however, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has repeatedly used Autopilot with his hands off the wheel during demonstrations.

Here are all the times Tesla drivers were caught apparently sleeping at the wheel throughout 2019.

In January, an anonymous tipster sent the car news site Jalopnik video of a "dangerous idiot" apparently sleeping at the wheel of his Autopilot-driven Tesla Model X.

REUTERS/Noah Berger

In March, a Twitter user posted a video of a Tesla driver appearing to sleep at the wheel on a Los Angeles highway.

Dutch police stopped a Tesla driver in May who was allegedly sleeping behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol.

President Donald Trump's campaign manager, Brad Parscale, in a statement said: "The decision by Bloomberg News to formalize preferential reporting policies is troubling and wrong ... Amy Moors, a sex researcher at Chapman University in California who studies consensually non-monogamous relationships like polyamory, swinging, and open relationships, suggested this book, which is all about how to navigate non-monogamous relationships in a way that is considerate of your own needs and the needs of your partners.

It's a great jumping-off point for someone who is interested in open or poly relationships but only has experience with monogamy thus far.

Moors also suggested this book about the challenges and benefits of consensually non-monogamous relationships. To write it, the author interviewed over 100 people in those setups.

The book also includes exercises so "you and your partner can fill out different things and kind of talk about desires," Moors told Insider. "You can really jump-start the conversation that can normally be awkward or difficult for someone."

The pages are filled with OkCupid data that illuminates singles' online habits when they're dating around.

5 ways to earn credit card points faster, from dining rewards programs to referral bonuses

Posted: 02 Dec 2019 09:34 AM PST

credit cards 26Crystal Cox/Business Insider

  • Many credit cards come with great sign-up bonuses that reward you with thousands of points or miles, or hundreds of dollars of cash back, after you meet a minimum spending requirement in the first few months after you open your account.
  • But how do you keep accumulating points once the card is in your hands and you've earned the intro bonus?
  • Some of the best ways to earn more points include joining a dining rewards program, referring friends, and buying things online through your credit card's shopping portal.
  • Read more personal finance coverage.

If you signed up for a new rewards credit card recently — like the Chase Sapphire Reserve or the Citi®/AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® — chances are you got a big sign-up bonus of rewards points or miles. But how can you keep earning extra points on top of your regular spending after you've earned the welcome bonus? Fortunately, there are a few easy tricks to help you on your way to that dream vacation or anything else you're saving points for.

But first, a word of warning: Credit cards play a big role in maintaining a healthy credit profile and score. Make sure you're aware of the impact that opening a new card can have, especially if you're planning to apply for a mortgage or finance a major purchase anytime soon.

It's also important to practice financial discipline when targeting credit card rewards — paying your balances off in full each month, making payments on time, and not spending more than you can afford to pay is the best course of action. After all, interest and late charges can cancel out the value you get from your rewards.

If you're still trying to decide which credit card is best for you, you can check out our full guide on the best rewards credit card offers.

Shopping portals

Many credit card rewards programs and frequent flyer programs let you earn tons of bonus points by shopping online at everyday retailers. By logging into your account, navigating to the shopping portal (usually found under "earn points"), clicking the site you want to visit, and completing your purchase without closing that window, you can watch your points multiply.

For instance, as of publish time the Chase Ultimate Rewards shopping portal was offering 2 points for every dollar spent online at J.Crew, 2 points per dollar at Sephora, and 6 points per dollar at Bloomingdale's.

Dining rewards

You can earn extra frequent flyer miles just for dining out. By signing up with a program called Rewards Network, you earn miles each time you pay at a participating restaurant, plus a bonus of up to a few thousand miles when you first sign up and start eating.

The program is fairly simple: You sign up with your preferred airline's dining program, and then register your credit or debit card. Each time you use that card at a participating restaurant, your payment is recognized by Rewards Network and you earn extra miles.

Most major US airlines participate, as well as a few hotel chains. You can look up participating restaurants at the Rewards Network website, as well as see what sign-up bonuses are currently offered.

Make sure you "double-dip" on earning rewards by using a credit card that offers bonus points, miles, or cash back for dining purchases to pay for your meals out. Our favorite options include the Chase Sapphire Reserve (3x points on dining), the American Express® Gold Card (4x points at restaurants worldwide), and the Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card (3x points on dining out and ordering in).

Referral bonuses

Crystal Cox/Business Insider

Have you gotten a lot of value from your Chase Freedom? Have you been happy with the perks that come with your Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express? Know a friend or family member who's looking for a new card? Many credit and charge cards offer bonuses if you refer a new cardholder — a great way to help recommend a card to a friend and get rewarded at the same time.

American Express and Chase run the most robust credit card referral bonus programs, which you can access at the following sites:

Capital One, Citi, and Discover also offer cardholders referral bonuses. Capital One usually sends out referral bonus offers via email, while you can find your referral bonuses on Citi and Discover by logging in to your account.

Follow the prompts to refer a friend to a card (via a referral link you send them). If they apply for the card and are approved through your referral link, you earn a bonus — depending on the card, the referral bonus could be 5,000 to 10,000 points or miles. Best of all, the person you referred gets the standard sign-up bonus, too.
