The EU Goes Into Lockdown As The Covid-19 Coronavirus Pandemic Spreads

Posted: 14 Mar 2020 10:57 PM PDT

Daily Mail: How the world was paralysed in 66 days: In two months, the killer virus has swept the world at devastating speed with more than 153,000 reported infected as the EU goes into lockdown with France shutting the Eiffel Tower and Spain closing its borders

* Countries across Europe went into lockdown yesterday in an attempt to stem the number of Covid-19 cases
* France closed all non-essential public locations including restaurants, shops, cinemas, and Eiffel Tower
* Spanish Government declared state of emergency as death toll rose by 120 and infections surpassed 5,700
* Borders in Denmark, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Russia, and Ukraine closed yesterday
* Over half of all cases are in China, while Italy and Iran have been hit hardest outside of the People's Republic

Countries across Europe were placed into lockdown yesterday in a desperate attempt to stem the soaring tally of coronavirus cases after the Continent became the new 'epicentre' of the global pandemic.

France last night took the decision to close all non-essential public locations.

Restaurants, shops, cinemas and cafes have shut for the foreseeable future as French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe branded the virus the 'biggest health crisis in a century'.

In Spain, the government declared a state of emergency as the death toll there rose by 120 and the number of confirmed cases leapt from 1,500 to more than 5,700 in 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Poland shut down all its airports - forcing thousands of stranded British tourists to head out of the country by car.

Borders were also closed to foreign visitors in Denmark, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Russia and Ukraine.

Iraq Military Base Housing U.S. Troops Hit By A Wave Of Rockets For A Second Time This Week

Posted: 14 Mar 2020 10:24 PM PDT

Daily Mail: Barrage of rockets hit US coalition-base Camp Taji in Iraq just days after missile attack killed British female Lance Corporal, 26, and two American troops

* Three coalition soldiers - a British woman and two Americans - killed Wednesday
* British Lance Corporal Brodie Gillon, 26, a reserve, died in attack on Camp Taji
* The US retaliated by killing five Iraqi security forces and a civilian in air strikes

A barrage of rockets has hit an Iraqi military base housing US-led coalition troops for the second time this week, security officials said.

Three coalition service personnel - a British woman and two Americans - were killed in the first attack on Camp Taji on Wednesday.

It was the deadliest attack on coalition troops in Iraq since a late December rocket attack on an Iraqi base that killed a US contractor and set in motion a series of tit-for-tat attacks that brought Iraq to the brink of war.

In retaliation, the US launched a series of air strikes on militia bases across Iraq's south, killing five Iraqi security forces and a civilian.

Covid-19 Coronavirus Impacting US Defense Readiness

Zero Hedge: Covid-19 Impacting US Defense Readiness As Pentagon Announces "Minimal Staffing"

The Pentagon on Saturday afternoon said it has moved toward "minimal staffing" over coronavirus fears a day after President Trump formally declared a national emergency. CBS national security correspondent Cami McCormick broke the news, describing:

Defense Dept. officials have raised alert level at the Pentagon to Bravo. There will now be "minimal staffing" at the Pentagon due to coronavirus.

Crucially this alert level refers to staffing levels and virus precautionary measures only and is not a reference to DEFCON, which is the national defense readiness condition used to gauge military threats.

Pentagon Bans All Domestic Travel For Personnel And Families Amid Covid-19 Coronavirus Pandemic

Military Times: DOD bans all domestic travel for personnel and families amid coronavirus crisis

UPDATE: Pentagon officials have posted additional information about the travel restrictions on the Defense Department web site.

Pentagon officials late Friday announced a total domestic travel ban for all troops, civilian personnel and their families until May 11 in an effort to limit their potential exposure to the coronavirus.

In addition, troops will be granted "only authorized local leave" for the duration of the travel restrictions, limiting their ability to visit family and friends in far away states.

"The continuing spread of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) necessitates immediate implementation of travel restrictions for domestic Department of Defense travel," the memo announcing the new travel rules stated.

Travelling between my home and chalet today. Blogging will return later this evening.

My mother has a doctor's appointment this Monday (she is 93). Nothing serious. She is participating in a clinical trial on memory loss. After that it is off to the chalet to weather out this pandemic. I am not worried about myself, I am more worried that if I get sick I will probably transmit this illness to my mother. That possibility is unacceptable to me. So I going to self-isolate myself as best as I can. And while I will need to go back and forth to Montreal at least once a week, any contact with people will be done with the proper precautions. And as for this blog. I am all set up in my chalet. There should be no interruptions.

One more message, and IMHO an important one, is to the readers of this blog. Your support and  messages are appreciated. I know all of you are prepared for what is coming. And for those who are experiencing it right now, I know you will be a stronger and tougher person when you come out of it. I sometimes forget that the WNU community is very big, diverse, and spread throughout the world. And while we differ on a lot issues, we are all facing the same foe right now. That unity is a lot of strength, and it is why I know that in the end, we will all be OK.

Update #2: The GF is staying in Kingston where she lives and work. But if everything shuts down she will self-isolate, and she will meet me at my chalet two weeks later where I am set up to live comfortably and without stress for a long time.

With everything that's happening about the Coronavirus, it might be very hard to make a decision of what to do today. Should you wait for more information? Do something today? What?

Here's what I'm going to cover in this article, with lots of charts, data and models with plenty of sources:

* How many cases of coronavirus will there be in your area?
* What will happen when these cases materialize?
* What should you do?
* When?

When you're done reading the article, this is what you'll take away:

The coronavirus is coming to you.
It's coming at an exponential speed: gradually, and then suddenly.
It's a matter of days. Maybe a week or two.
When it does, your healthcare system will be overwhelmed.
Your fellow citizens will be treated in the hallways.
Exhausted healthcare workers will break down. Some will die.
They will have to decide which patient gets the oxygen and which one dies.
The only way to prevent this is social distancing today. Not tomorrow. Today.
That means keeping as many people home as possible, starting now.

Times Square Is Nearly Empty After President Trump Declares A National Emergency Over The Covid-19 Coronavirus Pandemic

Posted: 14 Mar 2020 07:15 AM PDT

WNU Editor: The same is happening in Montreal. Took the Montreal metro last night. It was almost empty. And the bar that I went to see a friend to have a beer .... a bar that is usually packed .... was almost empty. My brother is also telling me that the highways around the Bay area in California are almost empty. Bottom line. The economic impact from this pandemic is going to be huge.

Update: Here is a good analysis on the impact that the Covid-19 coronavidurs pandemic is going to have on the national and global economies .... How The Covid-19 Shock Is Different (Zero Hedge).

The Psychology On Why People Buy Toilet Paper In An Emergency

Posted: 14 Mar 2020 07:38 AM PDT

CNN: The psychology behind why toilet paper, of all things, is the latest coronavirus panic buy

Now, novel coronavirus panic buyers are snatching up ... toilet paper?

Retailers in the US and Canada have started limiting the number of toilet paper packs customers can buy in one trip. Some supermarkets in the UK are sold out. Grocery stores in Australia have hired security guards to patrol customers.
An Australian newspaper went so far as printing eight extra pages in a recent edition -- emergency toilet paper, the newspaper said, should Aussies run out.

Why? Toilet paper does not offer special protection against the virus. It's not considered a staple of impending emergencies, like milk and bread are.

So why are people buying up rolls more quickly than they can be restocked?

WNU Editor: I experienced this more than once in the former Soviet Union. Lines would form in front a store because there is a rumour that it has something to sell at a good price. And yes, that experience in the Soviet Union scarred me. As a rule I always make sure that I have a two to 3 month supply of food and essentials in my home in Montreal, my chalet north of Montreal, and in my home in Moscow. And as for toilet paper. Toilet paper in the Soviet Union was cardboard crap, and everyone hated it. That is why today I always make it a rule to have a case of toilet rolls (50 rolls/case) on reserve in my home in Montreal and in Moscow. I never, never, never want to go through the experience of running out of toilet paper that I had 35 years ago. And trust me on this. Neither will you.

Update: The next rush will be on dog and cat food. I asked the GF yesterday on how much dog food that she had left for her rottweiler. She had about a week left. Rushed to the store, and there were only two bags of the brand that she uses left. She bought it right away. The shelves were almost empty for the other brands.
