  • Attorney General William Barr installed a prosecutor to review the criminal case against Michael Flynn, President Donald Trump's former national security adviser, The New York Times reported Friday.
  • The news comes just days after senior Department of Justice officials publicy undermined career prosecutors by minimizing the sentence recommendation for the Republican strategist Roger Stone.
  • The events have fueled speculation that President Donald Trump and his allies are interfering in DOJ criminal cases.
  • Prosecutors resigned en masse from the Stone case after the sentencing dispute, and Barr urged Trump in an ABC interview to stop tweeting about DOJ cases because it was "impossible for me to do my job."

Attorney General William Barr assigned a prosecutor to review the criminal case against Michael Flynn, President Donald Trump's former national security adviser who pleaded guilty in 2017 as part of the special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation, The New York Times reported Friday

The unusual move is likely to fuel further speculation of political interference in Department of Justice cases.

The new flagship smartphones are all incredibly expensive, and it's a worrying trend that suggests 5G is only for those who can afford it

  • Almost all top-spec Android smartphones of 2020 will come with 5G connectivity because the premium Qualcomm chip of 2020 supports 5G connectivity by default.
  • Samsung's latest Galaxy S20 phones with 5G start at $1,000, and there's no cheaper version of the Galaxy S20 like there was with the Galaxy S10.
  • The high price of Samsung's Galaxy S20 phones set a worrying precedent that the cost of entry for 5G is high, and it'll only be available to those who can afford it.
  • 5G wireless plans are also more expensive, or are only available on the most expensive plans.
  • Still, brand new generations of tech are often expensive at first, and prices come down when they flow into the mainstream. Let's hope the same goes for 5G.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

This year, the majority of premium top-spec Android phones will have 5G connectivity because the latest premium mobile chip from Qualcomm supports 5G by default.

That's great, as 5G is said to herald in a new age of seamless, fast, responsive internet speeds on our smartphones, making any buffering or slow speeds from today's 4G LTE networks a thing of the past.

But 5G is proving to be an expensive innovation.

Samsung's latest Galaxy S20 phones are among the first to run on the 5G Snapdragon 865 chip, and they're incredibly expensive. To be sure, smartphones in general have been getting pricier and pricier, but at least there's usually a less expensive alternative.

Not this time with Samsung's Galaxy S20 lineup, and it's setting a worrying precedent that suggests 5G is only for those who can afford it. Here are the signs:

All of Samsung's latest Galaxy S20 phones support 5G, and the cheapest S20 you can buy starts at $1,000, whereas the Galaxy S10e from 2019 started at $750.

Antonio Villas-Boas/Business Insider

Yes, the Galaxy S10e was a slightly pared down version of the full-fat $900 Galaxy S10. But the point is that there's no cheaper "e" version of the 5G Galaxy S20.

Hollis Johnson/Business Insider

It's not a simple case of rising smartphone prices.

Crystal Cox/Business Insider

No doubt, smartphones have been getting more expensive, but smartphone makers like Apple and Samsung have also offered cheaper alternatives to counter those rising prices — there was the $750 iPhone Xr for the $1,000 iPhone XS in 2018, the $750 iPhone 11 for iPhone 11 Pro in 2019, and the $750 Galaxy S10e for the $900 Galaxy S10 in 2019.

  • United Airlines said on Friday that it will cancel Boeing 737 Max flights until September 4. The airline previously planned to return the plane to service in early June.
  • The cancelation comes as the 737 Max nears the one-year anniversary of its global grounding, following the second of two fatal crashes.
  • Although the FAA chief said the Boeing plane may make its certification flight within the next few weeks, it will take time for airlines to get the planes out of storage and ready to fly again.

United Airlines said Friday that it would pull the Boeing 737 Max from its schedule until September 4, resulting in a second summer travel season without the troubled plane.

United, along with American Airlines and Southwest Airlines — the other two US airlines with the 737 Max — had previously canceled 737 Max flights through early June, but Reuters reports that Southwest recently extended to August 10. United said it expected to cancel about 80 daily flights in March and April, and 108 daily flights throughout May and early June.

The best natural protein powders

Posted: 14 Feb 2020 10:19 AM PST

  • Whether you're a fitness buff, trying to lose weight, or just looking for a healthy meal on-the-go, a good protein powder provides the nutritional benefits you're looking for.
  • Far too many protein powders are loaded with artificial or unhealthy ingredients, including sweeteners, added color, and preservatives.
  • Thankfully, there are still plenty of natural protein powders that offer all of the same benefits without any unwanted or unneeded additives.
  • We've rounded up a few of our favorite natural proteins, including everything from hemp and milk protein to those intended for vegans and vegetarians.

Without protein, there wouldn't be life. This essential macronutrient is made from various amino acids and is found in a variety of food sources, including meat, seafood, poultry, legumes, nuts and seeds, dairy products, and certain plants.

In your body, protein is crucial for muscle formation, the health and function of skin and other tissues, digestion, blood clotting, and hormone synthesis, as well as bone and ligament strength and the balance of your blood pH.

While most of us get enough protein from a balanced diet, there are times you need a protein boost. No matter if you're vegan, are trying to bulk up or follow a rigorous exercise schedule, or just don't like to eat much meat, the benefits of incorporating a protein powder into your diet are many. Extra protein helps keep your blood sugar balanced and promotes a feeling of fullness, which is vital if you're trying to lose some weight.

Choosing the right protein powder can be a puzzle. There are so many on the market comprised of different sources of protein. Whey, casein, soy, peas, and hemp are the most common. But far too many protein powders are full not only of the nutrition you want but with plenty of fillers you don't need — including artificial flavors, sweeteners, and colors.

That's why if protein powder is a regular part of your diet, it's a good idea to choose a powder that's as natural as possible. Luckily, there are plenty of natural and organic protein powders out there and to help simplify your decision, we've gathered information on the six best choices.

Here are the best natural protein powders you can buy:

Updates 2/14/2020 by Rick Stella: Updated formatting, links, and prices.

The best natural protein powder overall

Naked Whey is made with one ingredient and has 25 grams of protein per serving without any unwanted and unnecessary additives.

While there are several types of protein powders, whey remains the most popular and the most common. A protein found in milk, most people quickly and easily digest whey. It's loaded with amino acids that promote muscle growth and recovery, and it helps reduce appetite.

Unfortunately, far too many whey protein powders are full of artificial colors, flavors, and cheap whey protein, as well as preservatives and other unwanted chemicals. Naked Whey is different in that it has just one ingredient: whey protein. While it's available pre-flavored for convenience, the best way to buy it is unflavored, which mixes nicely into your favorite milk alternative, water, smoothie, or even juice without chalkiness or an unpleasant taste.

Naked Whey is entirely sourced from 100% grass-fed cows living on small dairy farms in California — rest assured, there's no unhappy bovines here. The protein powder is cold-processed to keep protein chains intact and it's also GMO-free, gluten-free, soy-free, and growth hormone-free.

Of course, every product has its downsides, and Naked Whey is no exception. It can often be tough to mix, and unless you use a blender or shaker, you can expect the powder to clump. If you're lactose-intolerant, you also might struggle to digest the whey protein.

Pros: Very high-quality whey protein powder with absolutely no unnecessary ingredients

Cons: Expensive, can be tough to mix, tough to digest for anyone who's lactose-intolerant

The best natural casein protein powder

Legion Athletics

Sourced from grass-fed cows with minimal additives, Legion Casein+ is as close to natural as you can get when it comes to this slow-absorbing protein.

Casein is another milk protein but unlike whey, it digests slowly. That makes it perfect for use before bed or for recovery after a tough workout. It's tough to find all-natural casein protein powders, however, because on its own, casein doesn't taste good and tends to have a gritty texture. Most companies add flavor or other better-taste-and-texture additives.

Legion Casein+ is as natural as you're going to get when it comes to casein protein, and provides 26 grams of protein per serving. It has only a handful of ingredients such as micellar casein — this is the full casein protein in its natural form and is easily digested — sourced from grass-fed cows living on small dairy farms in Ireland, soy lecithin to improve texture, natural flavor (either cocoa powder or vanilla), sea salt, and stevia leaf extract.

That means you get a highly digestible protein powder that tastes good, mixes into a creamy texture with your favorite milk alternative, smoothie, juice, or water, and leaves you feeling satisfied while your muscles improve themselves after a hard day's workout.

What the product doesn't contain is GMOs, added hormones, artificial flavors or colors, fillers, or antibiotics. If you have a stomach that doesn't do well with lactose, you'll love that the micellar casein is lactose-free. It also comes in two flavors, chocolate and vanilla.

Pros: Micellar casein, no lactose, few extra ingredients, nothing unnecessary or artificial, best protein to drink before bed

Cons: Can be a little chalky or lumpy if not mixed in a blender

The best natural goat milk protein powder

Mt. Capra

If you love the muscle-boosting powers of whey and casein but have a hard time digesting milk from cows, Mt. Capra Double Bonded Protein is for you.

While goat milk does contain lactose, the molecules are far smaller than lactose from cow's milk, so it's much easier for the human body to digest and absorb. Mt. Capra Double Bonded Protein is sourced from grass-fed goats raised in the Pacific Northwest and has no preservatives, GMO's, artificial flavors, or other unwanted additives.

You get a one-two punch of both casein and whey protein in this powder, so it has all the immediate muscle-building benefits of whey and the longer-acting muscle-restoring qualities of casein.

Each serving of the powder, which comes in chocolate or vanilla, provides a full range of all the essential amino acids plus 20 grams of protein. Go ahead and add it to water, or use the powder to fuel up your smoothies, hot cereal, or even pancake batter.

Although it's more expensive than protein sourced from cow's milk, the fact it also contains the benefits of casein and is much easier to digest makes it worth the investment.

Pros: A good alternative to cow milk, natural ingredients, both whey and casein protein

Cons: Some customers didn't like the taste, a few complained it was hard to mix, expensive

Shifting Gears: No one has figured out scooter economics yet

Happy Friday and welcome to another edition of Shifting Gears, Business Insider's rundown of everything that happened in transportation during the week.

The team had no shortage of captivating scoops, interviews, and other stories this week. In South Texas, there's a fight set between longtime homeowners and Elon Musk's plan for a Mars exploration base. And in California, more than 100 truckers lost their jobs as yet another freight company went belly up.

In mobility land, we chatted with the founder of Spin — a scooter startup owned by Ford — about his employees' unionization vote, missed targets, and elusive profits that have yet to materialize for anyone in the industry.

As always, let me know what we missed at If you're not already subscribed to this email roundup, you can do so here.

Dave Mosher's second dispatch from Boca Chica, Texas, is one you won't want to miss. Dave Finlay, a SpaceX executive, has been traveling door to door in the quiet retirement enclave near the beach. His mission: convince homeowners to sell and make way for Mars missions.

Scooter startups' growing pains

I interviewed Euwyn Poon, the founder and president of Spin, about how the scooter startup is faring just over a year after its sale to Ford for $100 million.

The company hoped to be in 100 markets by the end of 2019, but it's only in 70 now. That was a conscious decision by executives, Poon said, as the entire industry struggles to figure out tricky economics and turn a profit.

He also discussed his employees' bid to unionize, which would make them an outlier in an industry with an addiction to independent contract work.

Trucking struggles continue

As the $800 billion trucking industry grapples with the 21st century, another company announced its impending closure this week, my colleague Rachel Premack reports. When the closure happens, more than 100 jobs will go with it.

She also had a juicy scoop about Amazon's outsourcing of some technical-support roles, angering many drivers.

Lastly in her trifecta is the cohesive list of logistics startups set to soar this year, according to venture capitalists.

  • It's easy to buy books on Kindle through your computer or mobile device using Amazon.
  • To purchase a book for Kindle delivery, use Amazon's 1-Click option and select the correct device to download.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Unfortunately — like all Kindle apps — you are unable to purchase books directly on your Apple computer. The workaround is to purchase from Amazon and have the book immediately delivered to Kindle.

To do so, use Amazon's 1-Click option on your desktop or mobile device and select the Kindle you wish to deliver to.

New York is so expensive that millennials and Gen Zers are paying more than $900 a month to share small bedrooms, but residents say they get more out of co-living than just a place to sleep

  • The median monthly rent price for a one-bedroom apartment in New York in 2020 is $3,000, according to Zumper.
  • This can be out of reach for the average millennial and Gen Zer. Based on the average millennial's yearly income, millennials should only be spending around $998 a month on rent
  • Millennials and Gen Zers are still making their way to metropolises like NYC and San Francisco, and some of them are doing it thanks to a modern twist on an old trend, co-living spaces, where strangers share a home.
  • Outpost Club is a co-living company with houses in New York, Jersey City, New Jersey, and San Francisco. Its residents, which Outpost calls "members," share living spaces and, in some cases, even bedrooms. It's one of the cheapest co-living options in New York.
  • Around 50% of members are international, and members say the living arrangement helps them transition not only financially, but also mentally and socially, for life in NYC, but that it takes an extroverted person to get the most out of the co-living experience.

When 30-year-old Sean Finn was moving from Prague to New York, he said he was prepared for his new accommodation to be a scam.

"I thought it couldn't possibly be this easy," he told Insider, "and then it was."
