Harvard Chemistry Department Head Is Charged With Lying To US Officials About His Ties To Chinese Research Agencies

Posted: 28 Jan 2020 10:00 PM PST

Reuters: U.S. charges target alleged Chinese spying at Harvard, Boston institutions

(Reuters) - A Harvard University department chair and two Chinese nationals who were researchers at Boston University and a Boston hospital were charged on Tuesday with lying about their alleged links to the Chinese government.

The charges are part of an aggressive effort by U.S. authorities to block what they say are Chinese attempts to steal American scientific and technological advances.

"This is a very carefully directed effort by the Chinese government to fill what it views as its own strategic gaps," Andrew Lelling, U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts, told a news conference.

Daily Mail/AP: Pentagon now says 50 U.S. soldiers suffered traumatic brain injuries in the Iranian missile strike on an Iraqi base in retaliation for killing Soleimani after Trump initially said they were 'just headaches'

* Pentagon raised the number from 34 to 50 on Tuesday after the January 8 attack
* New total total belies President Trump's claim that no Americans were harmed
* He then sparked outrage by saying the injured troops suffered 'headaches' and it was 'nothing serious'

The Pentagon on Tuesday raised to 50 the number of U.S. service members who suffered traumatic brain injuries in Iran's missile strike earlier this month on an Iraqi air base, the third time the number of injuries has been increased.

The new casualty total belies President Donald Trump's initial claim that no Americans were harmed.

He then sparked outrage by saying that those who had been injured said they only suffered 'headaches' and it was 'nothing serious'.

Days after the attack, the military said 11 service members were injured. Last week, the Pentagon said that 34 U.S. service members were hurt.

VOA: Kenya Hospital Quarantines Student with Coronavirus-like Symptoms

NAIROBI - A student who arrived in Kenya from China Tuesday has been quarantined in Nairobi after exhibiting coronavirus-like symptoms. Kenya Airways, the airline that the patient flew, said the decision to quarantine him was made by health authorities at Nairobi's Jommo Kenyatta International Airport.

A Kenyan student who returned home from China Tuesday is currently being held in an isolation ward at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). There are fears he may have been infected with the deadly coronavirus that has claimed more than 100 lives in China.

Kenya Airways released a statement Tuesday saying the passenger was given clearance to fly by Chinese health authorities at Guangzhou Airport.

DW: Coronavirus paranoia is outpacing its actual danger

The fear of viruses, just like the price of shares, often has less to do with reality than with irrational expectations. The latest coronavirus epidemic will taper off, just like those before it, says Fabian Schmidt.

No doubt, the news of an impending epidemic is scary, and the novel coronavirus (nCoV) appears to be spreading rapidly with the number of deaths rising continuously. China, where the virus emerged, has implemented drastic measures and placed no fewer than 43 million citizens under quarantine. These steps will surely be effective in stopping the nCoV outbreak.

BEIJING (Reuters) - President Xi Jinping said on Tuesday that China was sure of defeating a "devil" coronavirus that has killed 106 people, but international alarm was rising as the outbreak spread across the world.

The United States said it was expanding screening of arrivals from China from five to 20 airports and would consider imposing further travel curbs.

"All options for dealing with infectious disease spread have to be on the table, including travel restrictions," said U.S. Health Secretary Alex Azar.

GOP Doesn’t Have The Votes To Block Impeachment Witnesses

Posted: 28 Jan 2020 05:55 PM PST

Wall Street Journal: McConnell Says GOP Doesn't Have Votes to Block Impeachment Witnesses

Senate majority leader makes remarks in private Republican meeting.

WASHINGTON—Republican leaders said they don't currently have enough votes to block witnesses in President Trump's Senate impeachment trial, people familiar with the matter said, after his legal team concluded its efforts to counter Democrats' charges that the president abused power and obstructed Congress.

On the third and final day of presentations by the Trump legal team, lawyers tried to cast doubts on the importance and credibility of allegations by former national security adviser John Bolton about the president's motives for freezing aid to Ukraine.

But at a meeting of all Republican senators late Tuesday, GOP leaders told their conference that they don't currently have the votes to prevent witnesses from being called, people familiar with the matter said. Republicans had hoped to wrap up the trial with an acquittal of the president by this week, but Democrats have said Mr. Bolton should appear under oath to offer a firsthand account of the president's motivations for freezing aid to Ukraine—a matter at the heart of the impeachment case.

Update #1: GOP doesn't have votes to block witnesses, McConnell says (AP)
Update #2: Graham: There will be 51 GOP votes to call Bidens, whistleblower (The Hill)

WNU Editor: As someone who lives outside the U.S., I must admit that American justice is strange. I never knew that you can have a trial where the witnesses are negotiated and voted upon by the jurors. And the punchline is that I doubt that the witnesses that the Democrats want to call will make a tangible difference in this impeachment trial. The phone call transcript/summary was released months ago, Ukraine did get their aid, and Ukrainian officials have made it clear that they never felt pressured from the White House. So what can these witnesses add? That they heard President Trump voice a desire or an opinion to impose conditions on Ukraine aid, but in the end did not follow through for reasons that only President Trump knows. Can an opinion be submitted as evidence? Is the President's thoughts an impeachable offence? For the Democrats and many others, it appears the answer is yes.

As to what  do I expect in the coming days, Republican Senator McConnell is a man who now expects a handfull of Republicans will support some of  the witnesses that the Democrats want. If true, this trial will then run into next week (and probably beyond), escalate calls for more investigations, and bog the Senate into a process that will satisfy no one. The State of the Union address will also be delayed.

If witnesses are to be called, I would like  to hear from the "whistle-blower", former Vice-President Biden, and his son Hunter Biden. The Biden's testimony will shed a clearer light on why President Trump felt motivated to investigate their involvement in Ukraine, and the "whistle-blower's" testimony will clarify why he felt this phone call was "dangerous" and needed to be reported, thereby setting in motion to where we are today. Since the Republicans have the majority in the Senate, they can do whatever they want. And if they want to placate their Democrat counterparts and the witnesses that they want, so be it. But if this is the course that some Republican Senators want to proceed, my suggestion to them is that they better not limit or put barriers to the defence team when they make their call for witnesses. Because if they do, you can take this to the bank, the Republican base will revolt against them.

The U.S. Navy said Tuesday that it had sailed a warship near the contested Spratly Islands in the South China Sea — home to fortified islands built by China — on Saturday, in what was believed to be its first freedom of navigation operation (FONOP) of 2020.

A spokesman for the U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet told The Japan Times that the USS Montgomery, an advanced littoral combat ship, had "asserted navigational rights and freedoms in the Spratly Islands, consistent with international law."

The latest FONOP "upheld the rights, freedoms and lawful uses of the sea," 7th Fleet spokesman Lt. Joe Keiley said, adding that the Montgomery had "challenged the restrictions on innocent passage imposed by China, Vietnam, and Taiwan."

U.S. Military Says There Were NO CIA Staff On Afghanistan Crash Jet

Posted: 28 Jan 2020 04:00 PM PST

Monday's plane crash is not expected to derail U.S.-Taliban peace talks if the crash investigation determines, as expected, that it was not the result of hostile action

Daily Mail: US military source says there were NO CIA staff on Afghanistan crash jet after Iranian media claimed officer 'behind Soleimani's death' was among those killed

* Taliban claimed it shot down a US jet over Dih Yak, Afghanistan, on Monday
* Iran amplified the claims, saying CIA chief behind Soleimani's death was killed
* US intelligence source told MailOnline absolutely no CIA personnel had died
* Comes after US official confirmed bodies of two Americans had been recovered

A US military source today said there were no CIA staff on a jet which crashed in Afghanistan on Monday after Iranian media claimed the officer behind Qassem Soleimani's death was among those killed.

The source told the MailOnline the wild claim that Michael D'Andrea was aboard the jet which crashed in Dih Yak, or indeed that any CIA members had been killed, was absurd.

A US official earlier confirmed the bodies of two American personnel had been recovered from the crash site while denying Taliban claims the E-11A communications jet containing 'high ranking officers' had been shot down.

Canada's third case of coronavirus has been confirmed in British Columbia, health officials said on Tuesday.

With the latest positive test, there are now eight confirmed cases of the contagious SARS-like virus in North America, including the five diagnosed in the US, where screening has been expanded to 20 airports, authorities from the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a press conference on Tuesday.

* The 33-year-old man caught his illness from a colleague who travelled to Germany from Shanghai

A German man infected with the Wuhan coronavirus has become the first person in Europe to catch the virus without even going to China.

The 33-year-old, who works as a car parts supplier, caught the disease in his home country on January 21 from a colleague who was visiting from China and later became ill on her flight home. She was from Shanghai but had recently visited her parents in Wuhan.

Fears of the deadly coronavirus, which has now infected more than 4,500 people, spreading around the world are growing as the German man's case is one of four – men in Vietnam, Japan and Taiwan have also been infected at home.

President Trump Unveils His Middle East Peace Plan

Posted: 28 Jan 2020 02:04 PM PST

Daily Mail: Donald Trump unveils his 'vision' for 'two-state solution' to bring peace to the Middle East - with a TUNNEL linking the West Bank and the Gaza Strip

* Donald Trump unveils Middle East peace 'vision' in the East Room of the White House , standing beside Benjamin Netanyahu
* White House pointedly avoids using the word 'plan' in describing what was unveiled in formal statement - but Trump tweets the word 'plan' anyway
* Trump's outline would offer a two-state solution with a defined map of Israel and Palestine and a freeze on new Israeli settlements
* It would join the Gaza Strip to the West bank by a tunnel making the two Palestinian territories contiguous
* But it would also require the Palestinians to reduce their territorial claims - something they have already said they will not do
* No Palestinians were present at the unveiling of the 'vision,' nor any Congressional Democrats, nor Netanyahu's political rival Benny Gantz
* Critics say the scheme is an attempt to boost Netanyahu's election chances; hours earlier he gave up seeking immunity from corruption charges

Donald Trump unveiled his long-awaited Middle East peace 'vision' Tuesday afternoon with embattled Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his side - saying there would be a 'two-state solution' with a tunnel linking the West Bank to the Gaza Strip.

'My vision provides a win win solution for both sides,' the president said to great applause from the pro-Israel audience at the White House.

Trump said it was a 'vision for peace, prosperity and a new future' for both Israel and Palestine as he spoke in the East Room of the White House, reading from a teleprompter and declining to take questions.

U.K. Will Allow Huawei To Build Parts Of Britain’s 5G Network

Posted: 28 Jan 2020 01:57 PM PST

The Telegraph: Huawei will be allowed to build parts of Britain's 5G network

Huawei will be allowed to build parts of Britain's 5G network, Boris Johnson has ruled.

The Chinese company will be given access to "non-core" parts of the network but will be banned from "sensitive locations" such as military or nuclear sites.

The decision comes amid warnings from the United States and Tory MPs that giving Huawei access to 5G could jeopardise transatlantic intelligence sharing.

On Tuesday the National Security Council, which comprises the Prime Minister, senior Cabinet ministers and representatives of the security services, decided to proceed with the Huawei deal even though it is a "high risk vendor" because its risks can be "safely managed".

National Post/Bloomberg: U.S. says it has recovered bodies from plane crash site after Afghan troops battled Taliban for access

The Taliban claimed it had shot the aircraft down, while the U.S. denied the plane was hit by hostile fire

The United States on Tuesday recovered the remains of two U.S. service members from a military aircraft that crashed in Afghanistan and was in the process of confirming their identities, a U.S. defence official said.

The U.S. military has said an E-11A aircraft crashed in the province of Ghazni, but has disputed Taliban claims to have brought it down. It has not been confirmed exactly how many people may have been on board the craft.

"While the cause of crash is under investigation, there are no indications the crash was caused by enemy fire," U.S. Colonel Sonny Leggett said in a statement. "Taliban claims that additional aircraft have crashed are false."

Former Attorney General Has Presented The Best Defense (IMHO) For President Trump In The US Senate Impeachment Trial

Posted: 28 Jan 2020 11:33 AM PST

WNU Editor: From PBS .... Pam Bondi, the former attorney general of Florida who is a member of the Trump impeachment legal team, outlined on Jan. 27 the concerns she said the president had about potential corruption on the part of the Bidens in Ukraine. Bondi pointed to numerous news reports raising questions about Hunter Biden's appointment to the board of Ukrainian energy company Burisma. The move "looks nepotistic at best, nefarious at worst," Bondi said, speaking on the Senate floor during the impeachment trial.

I have been watching on and off the impeachment Senate trial. Pam Bondi gave, from what I have seen so far, the best presentation for the defense.

German Man Catches The Deadly Coronavirus WITHOUT Going To China

Posted: 28 Jan 2020 09:47 AM PST

More than 4,500 people around the world are now confirmed to have caught the coronavirus and 106 people have died, all of them in China. Germany, Sri Lanka and Cambodia yesterday became the latest countries to declare infections

Daily Mail: Now German man catches the deadly coronavirus WITHOUT going to China: Europe records its first case of human-to-human transmission as Hong Kong BANS travel to the mainland and Australian celebrity hotel goes into lockdown amid worldwide fears

* The 33-year-old man caught his illness from a colleague who travelled to Germany from Shanghai
* She had recently visited her parents in Wuhan, the centre of the outbreak, and fell ill on her flight home
* Two other men have been infected despite not travelling to China – one in Japan and one in Vietnam
* Hong Kong's chief, Carrie Lam, today said trains and ferries to the Chinese mainland would be stopped
* Hong Kong will also halve the number of flights to China and stop giving visas to visitors from China
* In Australia the Peppers Broadbeach hotel on the Gold Coast was visited by hazmat-clad paramedics today

A German man infected with the Wuhan coronavirus has become the first person in Europe to catch the virus without even going to China.

The 33-year-old caught the disease in his home country on January 21 from a colleague who was visiting from China and later became ill on her flight home. She was from Shanghai but had recently visited her parents in Wuhan.

Fears of the deadly coronavirus, which has now infected more than 4,500 people, spreading around the world are growing as the German man's case is one of four – men in Vietnam, Japan and Taiwan have also been infected at home.

Countries around the world are starting to cut ties with China and pull their citizens out of the crisis-hit Hubei region, where the virus emerged in the city of Wuhan.

Russia's 'Nuclear Doomsday Machine' Is Being Upgraded

Posted: 28 Jan 2020 07:27 AM PST

Zero Hedge/SouthFront: Dead Hand: Russian Real-Life Doomsday Machine

The existing system of international relations and arms control treaties is slowly, but steadily crumbling. The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty is dead, with both Washington and Moscow publicly developing previously banned short-to-medium range missiles. The New START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) is also moving towards its end in 2021, and it is likely that New START will not be renewed. The United States, China and Russia are developing hypersonic weapons, which are not limited by any existing arms control treaties. The major powers are preparing for a possible global conflict. The dismantlement of the system of international treaties is another factor increasing military tensions around the world.

U.S. Senator Sanders Is Now The Front-Runner For The Democrat Nomination For President

Posted: 28 Jan 2020 07:28 AM PST

Bloomberg: Sanders Surges to Lead in California Propelled by Liberals

(Bloomberg) -- Bernie Sanders has not only taken the lead in several recent surveys of voters in Iowa, which holds the first in the nation caucuses on Monday, but he has also pushed to the head of the Democratic field in delegate-rich California.

The Vermont senator, who has had strong support from Latinos and young voters, has been propelled into the top spot by voters who self-identify as "very liberal," according to the latest UC Berkeley Institute for Governmental Studies poll, conducted for the Los Angeles Times.

Sanders has support from 26% of voters likely to cast ballots in the state's March 3 Democratic primary, drawing support from liberals largely at the expense of Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren. Warren is now backed by 20% of likely voters, which is down from earlier surveys showing she had 22% in November and 29% in September in the state.

Business Insider: Iranian state TV used a photo of an actor from 'Zero Dark Thirty' to spread a wild theory that a senior CIA official was killed in a plane crash in Afghanistan

* Iran's State TV seemed to confuse a real CIA agent with the character he inspired in the movie "Zero Dark Thirty" on Tuesday.
* The network claimed senior CIA agent Michael D'Andrea was among those killed in a US military plane crash in Afghanistan on Monday.
* State TV broadcast an image of Fredric Lehne, the US actor who played a character inspired by D'Andrea in the 2012 movie.
* Iranian TV provided no evidence for the claim that D'Andrea was killed on Monday.

Iran's state TV broadcast a photo of an actor from"Zero Dark Thirty" to illustrate a claim that the CIA officer that inspired the character had been killed.

On Monday, the US military confirmed an E-11A surveillance plane crashed in Ghanzi, eastern Afghanistan. The Taliban, who control the region, say several top CIA operatives were killed, and have since denied access to the crash site.

Reuters: Taliban repel Afghan forces' bid to reach U.S. plane crash site

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghan forces and Taliban fighters clashed in a central region where a U.S. military aircraft crashed, officials said on Tuesday, as the government tried to reach the wreckage site in a Taliban stronghold.

On Monday, the U.S. military said an E-11A aircraft crashed in the province of Ghazni, but disputed Taliban claims to have brought it down, without saying how many were aboard or if any had been killed.

Security forces were sent to the site immediately after receiving a report of the crash in the Deh Yak district, but were ambushed by Taliban fighters, Ghazni provincial police chief Khalid Wardak told Reuters.

"As per our information, there are four bodies and two onboard were alive and they are missing," Wardak said, adding that the forces subsequently received an order to retreat and airborne action is to be taken instead.

Historians Uncover A Fourth Soviet Spy Who Worked On The U.S. Atomic Bomb

Popular Mechanics: Historians Unmask Fourth Soviet Spy Who Worked on the Atomic Bomb

Just what nuclear secrets did "Godsend" deliver to Russia in the 1940s?

* Historians have unmasked a fourth Soviet spy who worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory during nuclear bomb development in the 1940s.
* Los Alamos is still one of the foremost nuclear research facilities in the world.
* The fourth spy was much more involved in high-level explosives research than historians could extrapolate before.

The New York Times reports that historians have unearthed a new, fourth Soviet spy who worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory during development of nuclear bombs in the late 1940s. During that time, the Soviets developed their own nuclear bomb prototype by 1949, indicating someone working from the inside of U.S. nuclear research. Codenamed "Godsend," this spy worked closely with the development of explosive triggers for nuclear bombs.

The spy was named Oscar Seborer, and although he was originally uncovered by 1956 at the latest, those papers were only declassified late last year. In the meantime, historians had used other evidence to put together a case that there was a fourth spy, codenamed Godsend, who was working at Los Alamos. They published their findings in a CIA journal called Studies in Intelligence.
