RFE: Trump Heard Asking On Tape: How Long Can Ukraine Last 'In Fight With Russia'?

U.S. President Donald Trump asked dinner guests how long Ukraine would be able to resist Russian aggression, according to a tape recorded at a 2018 gathering with donors.

"How long would they last in a fight with Russia?" Trump is heard asking in the audio portion of a video recording obtained by U.S. media outlets, including the Associated Press and ABC News, on January 24-25.

Someone is heard on the tape saying, "Without us, not very long."

"Without us," Trump repeats.

Trump also asks whether Kyiv felt it was "going to be OK" in its conflict with Russia.

"They feel they're going to be OK if you support them," someone replies.

"It's always us that has to support everyone," says Trump, who then complains that European nations were not doing enough to share the burden.

SIPRI: China Is The World’s Second-Biggest Arms Producer

Reuters: China has world's second-largest arms industry, think tank estimates

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Newly available data suggests that China is the world's second-biggest arms producer, behind the United States and ahead of Russia, a leading conflict and armaments think-tank said on Monday.

A lack of transparency means the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute has excluded China from its annual global rankings of arms makers, but it said credible financial information had become available for four major companies.

The data, covering the period from 2015 to 2017, allowed it to compile what it called the most comprehensive picture of Chinese companies' weapons production to date.

"With the increase of available data on these companies, it is now possible to develop reasonably reliable estimates of the scale of the Chinese arms industry," the institute said.

The four companies had combined estimated arms sales of $54.1 billion for 2017, it said, which would put them among the top 20 arms producers in the world.

The coronavirus death toll has skyrocketed to eighty, with 24 new fatalities reported at the outbreak's epicentre in Wuhan in China and nearly 400 new cases - as experts warn it can spread before symptoms show.

Speaking at a press conference this morning, health minister Ma Xiaowei said 'it seems like the ability of the virus to spread is getting stronger' and that it can be passed from person-to-person during its 14-day incubation period.

Total confirmed cases of the virus nationwide rose sharply to 2,744, and while there were no new deaths confirmed outside of Hubei, the national tally of verified infections rose by 769, around half of them in Hubei, the National Health Commission said.

It said 461 of those infected were in serious condition. China has locked down Hubei in the country's centre, an unprecedented operation affecting tens of millions of people and intended to slow transmission of the respiratory virus.

Is North Korea Preparing For A Major Missile Test?

Posted: 26 Jan 2020 06:27 PM PST

CNN: Satellite imagery shows activity at critical North Korean missile site

Recent satellite imagery shows vehicle activity at a critical North Korean missile site that could potentially signal early preparations for a missile or missile engine test, according to one administration official and three defense officials familiar with the latest US assessment.

Vehicles have been seen at the Sanumdong missile research center near Pyongyang in recent days, the officials said. The vehicles are not believed to be involved in fueling missiles and US officials are not certain whether North Korea may be moving toward the launch of a short-or-medium-range missile or an engine test.

The "activities are consistent with what we've seen prior to other missile tests," one senior US official said. The officials, however, said there is no indication of an imminent test launch but added as always they cannot rule it out.

Iranian Foreign Minister Asks Trump For Talks And To Remove Sanctions. Trump Says No

Trump repeated his tweet dismissing negotiations in both English and Persian

Daily Mail: 'We're still at the negotiating table': Iranian Foreign Minister asks Trump for talks and to remove sanctions - but President says 'No Thanks!' in English and Persian

 * Foreign Minster Mohammed Javad Zarif said Iran is willing to negotiate
 * But said U.S. must drop all sanctions as a precondition to any talks
 * 'No thanks!' Trump tweeted in English and Persian in response
 * Tensions remain high after US drone strike that killed top Iranian general

Iran's foreign minister has said that the country is open to negotiations with the U.S. on the condition that all sanctions are lifted, a proposal that President Donald Trump quickly dismissed.

Foreign Minster Mohammed Javad Zarif told Germany's Der Spiegel magazine that he would 'never rule out the possibility that people will change their approach and recognize the realities,' in an interview conducted Friday in Tehran.

Although Zarif suggested Iran was still willing to talk, he reiterated his country's previous demand that first the U.S. would have to lift sanctions.

'For us, it doesn´t matter who is sitting in the White House, what matters is how they behave,' he said. 'The Trump administration can correct its past, lift the sanctions and come back to the negotiating table. We´re still at the negotiating table. They´re the ones who left.'

US embassy in Baghdad has been repeatedly targeted by rockets (Reuters)

Daily Mail: Three rockets 'score direct hits on the US embassy in Baghdad' in latest round of missiles aimed at heavily fortified Green Zone

* The diplomatic mission has been regularly hit by rockets in recent months
* Sunday's attack took place earlier than usual and is first time direct hit reported
* It comes as demonstrators hit Iraq streets to keep up their protest movement

Three rockets slammed into the US embassy in Iraq's capital on Sunday in the first direct hit reported after months of close calls, as thousands kept up anti-government sit-ins across the country.

The attack marked a dangerous escalation in the spree of rocket attacks in recent months that have targeted the embassy or Iraqi military bases where American troops are deployed.

None of the attacks has been claimed but Washington has repeatedly blamed Iran-backed military factions in Iraq.

On Sunday, one rocket hit an embassy cafeteria at dinner time while two others landed nearby, a security source said.

The top five candidates in the poll have all already qualified for the New Hampshire Democratic debate early next month. Tulsi Gabbard still needs to earn 5 per cent or more in two additional polls to earn a spot on stage

Daily Mail: Bernie Sanders emerges as top Democratic presidential candidate in New Hampshire survey as he continues his polling surge ahead of former frontrunner Joe Biden

* Sanders was able to surpass former Vice President Joe Biden, who is usually the national frontrunner, by 9 percentage points
* Former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg earned the No. 3 spot in the first primary voting state with 15 per cent support

Senator Bernie Sanders continued his poll surge in New Hampshire, the first primary state, earning 25 per cent support among more than 500 likely Democratic voters surveyed there.

The new CNN/University of New Hampshire poll, which was released Sunday, shows the Democratic socialist earning more support than some of his more establishment Democrat competitors.

The results come a little over two weeks before the state is set to hold the vote for the Democratic nominee they want to take on Donald Trump in November.

Joe Biden, the usual front runner in the Democratic field, fell nearly 10 percentage points behind Sanders with only 16 per cent support.

BBC: Mali: Militants on motorbikes kill 20 troops, officials say

Twenty members of the security forces have been killed in Mali by suspected Islamist militants, officials say.

The attack came early on Sunday at the Sokolo military camp in the central Segou region.

An official speaking to AFP news agency said the gunmen arrived on motorbikes and that all those killed were gendarmes or paramilitary police.

Militants linked to the Islamic State group or al-Qaeda often carry out attacks in Mali and the wider region.

Late last year, 24 soldiers were killed by militants in eastern Mali. Only weeks earlier, 54 troops had died in another attack.

In the latest incident, the army said militants damaged and stole military equipment. Five soldiers were injured, and a total of 60 survived the attack.

A witness described the scene as "complete chaos".

Kim Kyong Hui is seen here on the right, two seats away from Kim Jong-un

BBC: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's aunt reappears after six years

The aunt of North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un has been seen in public for the first time since the execution of her husband in 2013.

Kim Kyong-hui is the daughter of North Korea's founder, Kim Il-sung, and sister to former leader Kim Jong-il.

She had not been seen since her husband, Chang Song-thaek, was executed by her nephew for "acts of treachery".

But on Sunday, state media released a photo of her enjoying new year celebrations.

The photo, released by North Korea's state news agency KCNA, showed Kim Kyong-hui seated next to Kim Jong-un and his wife in a crowded theatre in Pyongyang. She was also included in the list of top-ranking officials in attendance.

Oliver Hotham, editor at NK News, which covers events in the reclusive nation, said the reappearance was a surprise.

"Many North Korea watchers had assumed that Kim Kyong-hui had gone into exile or even been killed in the wake of her husband's death," he told Reuters.

Russian media is all abuzz with reports that Vladislav Surkov, former Deputy PM, the ex-deputy head of the presidential administration and Vladimir Putin's long-time influential aide, has exited government service.

The reports cite Surkov's close associate Alexey Chesnakov who, writing on his Telegram Channel, said Surkov left his post, as an advisor to President Vladimir Putin, "in connection with the change of course in policy towards Ukraine." He noted that Surkov himself promised to reveal the details and talk about his future career plans next month.

NBC: Obama called Trump a 'fascist' during phone call, Sen. Kaine says in new Clinton film

The Va. lawmaker is heard discussing the conversation in 2016 in "Hillary," an upcoming documentary.

Barack Obama called Donald Trump a "fascist" in a phone conversation with Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia during the 2016 presidential election, Kaine says in a video clip featured in an upcoming documentary about Hillary Clinton.

Kaine, Clinton's running mate on the Democratic ticket, recounts the call during an exchange with Clinton that was caught on camera in 2016. Kaine's wife, Anne Holton, was also present.

"President Obama called me last night and said: 'Tim, remember, this is no time to be a purist. You've got to keep a fascist out of the White House,'" Kaine says before adding with a laugh that Obama "knows me and he knows that I could tend to err."

Clinton replies, nodding, "I echo that sentiment."

She then puts her hands to her chest and says, "But that's really — the weight of our responsibility is so huge."

Since Last Spring 20,000 Additional US Troops Have Been Deployed To The Mideast

Zero Hedge: 20,000 US Troops Have Surged Into Mideast Since Last Spring To 'Counter Iran'

The Associated Press reports a staggering surge of US troops into the Middle East since last Spring: "Over the past eight months, the United States has poured more than 20,000 additional troops into the Middle East to counter the escalating threat from Iran that peaked with the recent missile attack on American forces in Iraq."

This despite President Trump's multiple prior pledges to "bring the troops home" especially related to Syria and Iraq. Following the Soleimani assassination and subsequent Iranian ballistic missile retaliation on Ayn al-Assad airbase, where Friday it was reported that 34 soldiers suffered traumatic brain injuries (a dramatically increased figure up from the prior 11), this trend in force build-up looks to continue. Here's breakdown of the staggering numbers via the AP:

Sydney Morning Herald: US forces step up Islamic State operations in Syria

Green Village Base, Eastern Syria: US troops in Syria have picked up the pace of counter-terrorism operations following a lull, a top US commander says, but the future of the American mission remains uncertain amid changing dynamics in the Syrian conflict and the potential for renewed presidential intervention.

"The tempo is coming back," General Kenneth "Frank" McKenzie jnr, who heads US Central Command, said on Saturday during a visit to a constellation of tiny American outposts in eastern Syria.

American troops in Syria, like those in neighbouring Iraq, shifted their focus from anti-extremist operations to force protection after a January 3 strike in Baghdad killed major-general Qasem Soleimani, Iran's most influential military figure. Iran retaliated by launching ballistic missiles at US troops in Iraq, causing no deaths, although a number of service members have suffered symptoms believed to be associated with traumatic brain injury.

WNU Editor: Boasting that US troops are now conducting three to four operations a week with Syrian Kurdish forces against the Islamic State in a region as vast as eastern Syria tells me that if this is what is called "picking up the pace", then ISIS as an effective fighting force is definitely finished. The Zumwalt-Class Destroyer's Hull Design Handles Stormy Seas Better Than Other Classes Of Surface Warships

Business Insider/Defense News: Here's what it's like to sail the Navy's new stealth destroyer in stormy seas

* The Navy's three-ship Zumwalt-class destroyers have had some struggles during their development.
* But at sea, the new stealth destroyers handle as well, if not better, than previous classes of surface warships, according to sailors who've tested it out.

WASHINGTON — After years of stability questions about the hull design for the US Navy's new three-ship class of stealth destroyers, the commanding officer of the lead ship, USS Zumwalt, is satisfied: It handles the seas as well, if not better, than previous classes of surface combatants.

While underway last spring, Capt. Andrew Carlson and the crew of Zumwalt took the ship to Alaska, where they got to experience some heavy seas.

"We took advantage of a storm up near Alaska that presented us with Sea State Six conditions," said Carlson, referring to sea's waves between 13 and 20 feet high. "All told I'd rather be on that ship than any other ship I've been on."
