Is The Pentagon's 'Credibility Problem' Getting Worse?

Roll Call: Analysis: The Pentagon has a credibility problem, and it's only getting worse

The Defense Department's waffling on casualties from Jan. 8 Iran strike latest in a growing trend.

Americans breathed a collective sigh of relief when, the morning after Iran's Jan. 8 ballistic missile attack on Al Asad air base in Iraq, Defense Department leaders said there were "no casualties."

That initial assessment hasn't held up, and neither have the department's varying statements on the matter since then.

The Pentagon confirmed Friday that 34 personnel have been diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries or concussions from the strike. While half have subsequently returned to duty, 17 continue to be treated in Germany and the United States, Jonathan Hoffman, the Pentagon's chief spokesman, told reporters.

WNU Editor: For as long as I can remember the Pentagon has always had a problem communicating accurate information to the media and the public. This was usually due to two reasons .... (a) a deliberate decision from the top, or (2) inaccurate information that was not vetted and passed up the chain of command. But times have changed, and I have a contrarian point view from the above author. I believe the Pentagon is getting better, and I credit the role that the internet and social media are playing, and how they can quickly disseminate information that in the past would have been kept under wraps. In today's world it is very hard to pass misinformation or a narrative that is convenient politically. The truth always comes out in the end.

Posted: 25 Jan 2020 08:23 PM PST

NPR: Iraqi Security Forces Storm Tahrir Square, Clash With Protesters

Iraqi security forces launched a major crackdown on anti-government protesters Saturday from Baghdad to cities across the south after an influential Shiite cleric instrumental in the demonstrations withdrew his support.

In Baghdad, security forces stormed bridges, streets near Tahrir Square and a highway interchange that had been taken over by protesters, firing live bullets and tear gas and setting fire to tents where protesters have been living and where medics have treated the wounded. At least one protester was killed and dozens wounded, according to security and medical officials.

Cities across America are on high alert amid the escalating coronavirus crisis as 63 people in 22 states are suspected to have contracted the deadly strain.

Two cases have been confirmed in the US but officials have said they expect that number to grow as dozens more people are being tested for the virus that's sickened more than 1,400 and killed 42 in at least 12 countries.

Surges in medical mask sales have been seen in areas where possible cases have been reported as people do what they can to avoid contracting the disease, which experts say may be spread as easily as the common cold.

Extra precautions are being taken at airports nationwide as all passengers inbound from Wuhan, the Chinese city where the outbreak originated in late December, are being funneled to five major hubs for screening.

The deadly coronavirus is 'accelerating' and China is facing a 'grave situation', the country's president has said - as at least one doctor has died from the virus and the US prepares to evacuate citizens from crisis-hit Wuhan.

The virus-hit Chinese city of Wuhan, already on lockdown and where the virus is thought to have originated, banned most vehicle use downtown and Hong Kong said it would close schools for two weeks as authorities scramble to stop the spread of an illness that has infected more than 1,400 people worldwide and killed 42.

Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke following an emergency government meeting to warn that the spread of the killer virus is worsening, as video emerged showing medics collapsing at hospitals in the capital of central China's Hubei province as the coronavirus outbreak continues to move across the world.

As of 8 pm local time (1200 GMT) on Saturday, the death toll in China had risen to 42, authorities reported. Some 1,372 people in China had been infected with the virus - traced to a seafood market in Wuhan that was illegally selling wildlife.
