From Victoria's Secret to Prince Andrew: Jeffrey Epstein connections just keep derailing the careers of billionaires, royals, and the like. Here's the full list.

Jeffrey Epstein spent time with several of the most powerful leaders in the world, but not all of them faced the same consequences for associating with the convicted sex offender.

Billionaire L Brands CEO Les Wexner's relationship with Epstein may have cost him his career. Wexner is in talks to step down as L Brands' CEO after 57 years, The Wall Street Journal's Khadeeja Safdar and Corrie Driebusch reported Wednesday.

The report comes less than a week after billionaire hedge fund manager Glenn Dubin announced Tuesday that he was stepping down as Engineers Gate's chairman in a "pre-planned transition" after months of problems with at least one of the firm's five investors, The New York Post reported. Other well-known acquaintances in the Epstein orbit remain in their posts, including Microsoft founder Bill Gates, President Donald Trump, and investor Leon Black remain in their posts, however.

Epstein, 66, died by suicide in a Manhattan jail on August 10, as he awaited trial on charges of sex trafficking of minors.

Keep reading to find out which public figures' careers ended or were otherwise derailed amid reports of their connections to the dead sex offender.

1. President Donald Trump's labor secretary, Alex Acosta, stepped down amid backlash over a secret plea deal he orchestrated for Epstein in 2007.

Days after Epstein was arrested in July, Acosta began to face widespread calls to resign over the plea deal he orchestrated for the financier Jeffrey Epstein during his time as US attorney in Miami, Business Insider reported. Despite allegations that Epstein abused more than 30 underage girls, the financier was required to register as a sex offender and spent 13 months in jail. Epstein was allowed to leave the jail 12 hours a day, six days a week, for work release while serving his sentence.

"I thought the right thing was to step aside," Acosta told reporters, according to Bloomberg.

2. Netflix and FX severed their ties with film publicist Peggy Siegal in July after it was revealed that she got Epstein into A-list events in New York.

Charles Sykes/Invision/AP

In a statement provided to Business Insider in July, Siegal said:

"I believe I met Jeffrey Epstein sometime in 2005, and we became social friends as he was somewhat of a film buff who wanted to come to film screenings ... I did not know at the time — and did not learn until recently — that he had been abusing underage girls. When Jeffrey returned from Palm Beach and his time in jail, I understood that he had spent time in jail for soliciting a prostitute, and he assured me that he had changed his ways. I did not believe that the charges were very serious because I knew he was allowed to work from his office every day ... I am horrified as each of these women come forward and the accusations mount. I am deeply embarrassed by my relationship with him and that I allowed him to use me."

Before her relationship with Epstein was revealed, Siegal was a prominent New York publicist who has organized promotional screenings for films including "The Big Short," "Argo," and "The Revenant," Business Insider reported. Since then, she has only hosted one event, according to Vanity Fair.

Siegal complained about the uneven consequences for associating with Epstein in a January interview with Vanity Fair. "The men are fine," Siegal said. "They're moving on with their billions, and their jets, and their families, and their businesses. It's — it's a little — it's just odd that a single woman who's done nothing but kill herself for filmmakers has had to suffer like this. It's completely unfair."

3. MIT Media Lab director Joi Ito resigned in September after the New Yorker reported he quietly worked with Epstein to secure anonymous donations.

Anna Webber/Getty Images for The New Yorker

Ito worked with other directors and staff at the MIT Media Lab to quietly receive large anonymous donations from Epstein after Epstein was convicted of soliciting underage girls for prostitution, The New Yorker's Ronan Farrow reported.

Ito announced his resignation in an email to MIT's president and provost the next day, Business Insider reported. Ito also stepped down from roles at The New York Times Company, The MacArthur Foundation, and the Knight Foundation.

The best refrigerators

Posted: 30 Jan 2020 09:41 AM PST

  • Every kitchen needs a good refrigerator but finding one that's energy-efficient, budget-friendly, and spacious enough to hold your weekly grocery haul is key.
  • Our top pick is the Samsung 24.6 cubic foot French Door Fridge because it has lots of useful features and looks and performs like a much more expensive fridge.

When I was growing up, my family always had a standard white, freezer-on-top refrigerator. At some point, many of my friends started getting fridges with built-in water and ice dispensers on the door. I was enamored with this high-tech feature and never tired of helping myself to a glass of water.

Of course, refrigerators have come a long way since then. Recently, at Home Depot, my eight-year-old daughter and her friend amused themselves for half an hour playing with a futuristic Samsung Family Hub Smart Refrigerator. They used their fingers to draw pictures and make notes on the whiteboard and then recorded silly messages and played them back as other customers giggled. Other high-tech features on this fridge include three built-in cameras so you can see the inside of your fridge from anywhere and have the ability to stream music or watch TV right there on your appliance.

It's fun stuff, but smart fridges are expensive, and not everyone needs the advanced features. Most people just want an energy-efficient fridge with sufficient storage and a reasonable price tag, which is why our picks range from $700 to $2,000 with plenty of $1,000 to $1,500 options in between.

When choosing a fridge, you should consider which style you prefer.  The most popular style of fridge is one with French doors and a bottom freezer. Other common options include the classic freezer on top, or the side-by-side freezer and fridge.

It may sound obvious, but make sure you measure carefully to ensure that a new fridge fits into your allotted space. You should also measure all doorways and other possible obstructions like kitchen islands to make sure the fridge can actually get into your kitchen. You'll also want to consider inside capacity (measured in cubic feet) so you get enough space.

Most new refrigerators are much more efficient than older models. Still, it's a good idea to look for the EPA Energy Star rating. The ENERGY STAR Product Finder allows you to compare different features among refrigerator models to optimize your purchase.

Here are the best refrigerators you can buy:

Prices and links are current as of 1/29/20. As we test new appliances, we'll continue to update this post.

The best fridge overall

The roomy 25.5 cu. ft. French door Samsung fridge has many upscale features, a sleek design, and a reasonable $1,300 price tag.

Samsung has a reputation for making reliable appliances, and the French Door Fridge is no exception. This stylish fridge has lots of upscale features, including LED lighting, two humidity-controlled crispers, a digital thermostat, and three temperature settings in the pantry drawer (chilled, fresh, and deli).

To keep the fridge affordable, the ice maker and water dispenser are located internally. But the ice maker comes with a convenient oversized bucket, so you can churn out multiple cubes at a time. The internal water dispenser has a nice added touch: You are reminded when it is time to replace the filter.

It's an Energy Star appliance, too, so you can rest assured that this fridge won't consume tons of electricity. The fridge measures 35.8 by 70 by 35.6 inches, so make sure you have space for it.

There are more than 1,700 buyer reviews on Home Depot's website with an average of 4.2 out of 5 stars. Fans tout the sleek design and roomy interior. "Looks great and it's so spacious! I can access everything and rearranging the shelving is easy to set it to your liking," wrote one buyer. "The shelves are easy to wipe off, drawers slide easily. The refrigerator runs very quietly, holds its temperature in both the frig and the freezer," wrote another.

As for downsides, some Home Depot reviewers claim the fridge makes too much noise.

Pros: Well-priced, roomy, sleek design, adjustable shelving, multiple temperature controls

Cons: Some customers claim the unit is noisy

The best bottom-freezer fridge

The Whirlpool 18.5 cubic foot Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator makes it convenient to reach for frozen goods and the interior shelves are useful at keeping things organized.

Whirlpool has been making refrigerators since 1955, and it's one of the best-known brands in the world. This simple, but solid fridge offers spill-proof glass shelves, a roomy interior, an ice maker in the freezer, and humidity-controlled bins. There is no water dispenser.

It has the classic fridge look, except that the freezer is on the bottom instead of the top. The fridge measures 29.625 by 67 by 30.875 inches, so measure carefully. Inside, you'll find five fresh-food shelves, six door bins, and two freezer shelves for food storage. Whirpool's fridge also got the Energy Star seal of approval, so it won't consume much electricity.

Across the web, multiple professional reviewers highly recommend the Whirlpool 18.5 cu. ft Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator in Stainless Steel for its sturdy construction and high performance. Consumer Search highlights its great performance and reasonable price point.

There are more than 80 buyer reviews on Best Buy's website, with an impressive average of 4.3 out of 5 stars. "I am thrilled with the shelves on the doors because they are solid, so nothing falls out through the bottom like our previous refrigerator," wrote one reviewer who gave the fridge four stars.

"The refrigerator has much more space inside than I thought it would given it is smaller than most due to our limited space in kitchen," wrote another reviewer. "It is however noisier than I like. The ice maker is great and so far we have all the space in bins we need."

Pros: Affordable, highly-rated performance, roomy interior

Cons: Some users complain that it is noisy, wobbly drawers

The best side-by-side fridge

Best Buy

The sleek Frigidaire 22 cubic foot fridge has a thru-the-door ice machine, filtered water dispenser, and other fun features not found in traditional side-by-side fridges.

Some folks are still fans of the side-by-side fridges that were extremely popular in the 1990s. Practical advantages to this type of fridge include smaller doors and easy access to the freezer. It measures 33 by 69.625 by 32 inches.

This snazzy, counter-depth Frigidaire fridge with a thru-the-door ice and filtered water dispenser, offers some fun features including a place to store frozen pizzas, wine bottle holders on the door, a meat drawer with its own thermostat, and a "Sabbath mode" which allows it to be used by observant Jews on Jewish holidays.

Frigidaire's fridge is not Energy-Star Certified, so that is something to keep in mind. There is a one-year warranty for parts and labor, so if you run into problems within that period, you're covered.

Pros: Great price for counter-depth fridge, snazzy appearance, wine bottle holders

Cons: Some users complain that the fridge is noisy and that the drawers don't glide open and shut easily

Advertisers will spend around $5 million for a 30-second Super Bowl ad on Sunday – but they could be putting that money to better use

Posted: 30 Jan 2020 09:38 AM PST

  • With the Super Bowl this Sunday, prepare to see dozens of 30-second spots that cost brands and advertisers upwards of $5 million.
  • This money could, however, be used in potentially more lucrative ways, which calls into question if the price tag on these coveted ad spots is worth it.
  • To learn more about the future of TV and digital advertising, check out The Next Era of Advertising.

In an increasingly digital-obsessed world, the Super Bowl is one of the last draws of audiences to traditional TV where they are exposed to commercials. This globally televised game not only captivates sports fans around the world, but it throws down the gauntlet for advertisers interested in fighting for their 30 seconds of screen time.

While this event has been at the top of the annual most-watched broadcast list for decades, Super Bowl viewership has leveled off since its 114 million peak in 2015, and overall NFL viewership has also seen a decline. Recent studies have also found that viewers are not giving commercials their full attention, as 10% of consumers are forgetting the brands advertised, and 33% don't recall seeing the commercials in the first place.

Others argue that the social buzz of a popular commercial could increase brand awareness and even purchase intent, but it remains highly unlikely that advertisers would see a financial return on their substantial investment. With a $5 million dollar price tag just for a 30-second ad spot and additional costs such as ad creation, publicity, and other elements of the campaign, not to mention the costs to re-run the commercials after the Super Bowl, these brief commercials are a drain on any annual budget.

Major fast-food chains and retailers in China are shutting their doors as the deadly coronavirus continues to spread. Here's a list of closures.

An increasing number of fast-food chains and major retailers in China are issuing temporary closures as the coronavirus death toll continues to rise.

The outbreak is believed to have originated at a wet market in Wuhan, China, and has since been reported in 16 other countries, including Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore, Nepal, France, Australia, Malaysia, Canada, and the US. As of Wednesday morning, the virus has killed 132 individuals and infected more than 6,000, according to reports from The New York Times and CNN

McDonald's and Starbucks were among the earliest closures, with both fast-food chains announcing on Friday that they had closed select locations in China to prevent the spread of the virus among employees and customers. The closures came in tandem with mass quarantines in China and orders to halt public transit in Wuhan and neighboring cities.

Several major tourist attractions and hospitality companies including the Shanghai Disney Resort and InterContinental Hotels Group have also temporarily shut down, Bloomberg reported. Meanwhile, retailers like Walmart have announced they will stay open for now. A Walmart spokesperson told Business Insider the company is cooperating with local officials and health experts to "closely follow" and monitor the situation.

"We are actively reinforcing good hygiene practices in all of our Walmart and Sam's Club locations in China and reminding our teams that the health and safety of our associates and customers is our top priority," a Walmart spokesperson told Business Insider.

Below is a list of confirmed closures. We've reached out to several major fast-food chains and retailers with locations in China and will update this list accordingly.

According to the official Starbucks Weibo account, the company has closed all stores in Wuhan and the Hubei province through February 2, as well as the Starbucks Reserve Roastery Shanghai.

A Starbucks spokesperson told Business Insider the company will "continue monitoring this closely to take further actions as the situation evolves."

"We are working closely with local health authorities, taking actions with the health of partners and customers top of mind, including closing stores in some locations," the spokesperson said.

Here's how 3 brands have changed their Super Bowl ad plans following Kobe Bryant's death

  • Planters, Hard Rock International, and Hyundai's luxury brand Genesis are changing their advertising campaigns ahead of the Super Bowl following the death of Kobe Bryant, who died in a helicopter accident.
  • Planters' story centers around the death of its fictional character Mr. Peanut, who was shown in an earlier ad dying in a fiery explosion after a crash.

Planters nuts brand, hospitality brand Hard Rock International, and Hyundai's luxury car brand Genesis are changing their Super Bowl ad campaigns following the death of Kobe Bryant, his daughter, and seven others in a helicopter accident.

Here's how the three brands are shifting their advertising:

Hyundai's Genesis

Hyundai's Luxury car brand Genesis had planned to air an ad during the Super Bowl for its new SUV featuring celebrity couple Chrissy Teigen and John Legend at a going away party for "old luxury."

The original ad showed a parked helicopter, but the ad was taken down and edited to remove the scene with the helicopter following Bryant's death, a Genesis spokesperson told Business Insider in a statement. The edited ad is set to air during Sunday's game.

The spokesperson said the ad was filmed, edited, and delivered to Genesis before the accident on Sunday, after which the company took down and changed the ad "out of compassion and sensitivity to the families."

Hard Rock International is airing its first Super Bowl ad, but changed it ahead of Sunday's game to remove scenes that could be perceived as insensitive following Bryant's death, according to a report from Adweek

Its unclear what items the company specifically edited out of the ad, but the commercial is set to be a "highly visual, fast action commercial that will leave a lasting impression on audiences," according to a statement from Hard Rock International on Wednesday.

The ad, which has not been released, follows Jennifer Lopez on a "thrilling pursuit" through a Hard Rock hotel, the statement said. The Super Bowl itself is being held at the Hard Rock Stadium.

Planters started its Super Bowl ad campaign before Bryant's death, following the death of its fictional character Mr. Peanut

I made mac and cheese using 3 celebrity-chef recipes, and the best one was the easiest and cheapest to make

Posted: 30 Jan 2020 09:32 AM PST

celebrity chef macaroni and cheesePaige Bennett for Insider, Ray Tamarra/Getty, Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for Discovery

  • I followed macaroni and cheese recipes from celebrity chefs Robert Irvine, Rachael Ray, and Guy Fieri to see which was best.
  • The dish I made following Guy Fieri's recipe was tasty but it was really creamy and it didn't seem like it was worth all of the time it took to make.
  • Robert Irvine's recipe was fairly easy to follow and it had a few fun twists, but it wasn't my favorite.
  • Rachael Ray's recipe included low-cost ingredients, took less than 30 minutes to make, and it produced the tastiest macaroni and cheese.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

Even celebrity chefs put their own spin on comfort foods, including macaroni and cheese.

To see which famous recipe has the best flavor and value, I followed instructions from cooking icons Guy Fieri, Rachael Ray, and Robert Irvine.

Here are the recipes I followed:

Read on to see how these celebrity-chef recipes stacked up.

Guy Fieri's recipe required many steps and a sickening amount of heavy cream.

Paige Bennett for Insider

As I gathered the ingredients to make the mayor of Flavor Town's macaroni and cheese recipe, I was shocked by the amount of heavy cream in the dish.

Heavy cream is great since it can add a rich, smooth texture and a lot of flavor to a meal, but I have never in my life seen a recipe with four cups of heavy cream. Measuring all of it out kind of turned me off.

This recipe also required more ingredients than the others and it had a pretty lengthy list of instructions.

After more than 30 minutes of cooking, it was time to make the cheese sauce and the penne.

Paige Bennett for Insider

For starters, the recipe calls for dicing and cooking bacon. I don't eat meat, so I had my partner cook it. I later divided the recipe into two versions — one with real bacon and one with a plant-based option.

Next, I had to roast shallots and garlic, chop them, sauté them in bacon fat (I used butter), and then use it to make a roux (a floury mixture that helps thicken sauces).

Truthfully, roasting the shallots and garlic seemed like a waste of 25 minutes and it made it especially hard to chop them. I wish I could've just caramelized everything on the stovetop, which would've been just as flavorful and a lot easier.

I cooked the sauce and pasta simultaneously, although it took a while to reduce the sauce since it had so much heavy cream.

After the penne was done cooking, I mixed it with my cheese sauce and then split the mixture into two separate baking dishes.

Then, I finished off the macaroni and cheeses with a topping that consisted of melted butter, panko breadcrumbs, parsley, and bacon.

I cooked everything in the oven for another 30 minutes.

The macaroni and cheese tasted rich and it reminded us of diner food.

With four cups of heavy cream and three cups of cheese (cheddar and pepper jack), the resulting macaroni dish was unsurprisingly rich and creamy.

The crispy topping of bacon and panko also nicely contrasted the soft, creamy noodles.

Unfortunately, all of the effort that went into preparing the shallots and garlic seemed trivial since I couldn't taste either ingredient at all. I was also looking forward to a kick from the pepper jack, but there wasn't much of a cheesy flavor in this dish.

This macaroni and cheese mostly just tasted like cream and bacon. The entire thing resembled a baked penne Alfredo dish you might find at a diner, which is no surprise since this recipe is from the host of "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives."

Overall, this somewhat bland dish took a lot of effort and ingredients to make, so I wasn't thrilled.

Elon Musk was nicely rewarded for Tesla's better-than-expected earnings report Wednesday.

The automaker reported that it produced profits of $386 million during the fourth quarter, sending its share price up 7% and its CEO's net worth up $2.3 billion in the last hour of trading, Bloomberg reported.

Despite a net worth currently hovering around $33.6 billion, Musk has never taken a paycheck from Tesla, refusing his $56,000 minimum salary every year. In January 2018, Tesla announced it would pay Musk nothing for the next 10 years — no salary, bonuses, or stock — until the company reaches a $100 billion market cap. If and when that happens, Musk could potentially overtake Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos as the richest person in the world.

Keep reading to find out what we know about how Musk amassed his fortune and how he spends it.

As a child growing up in South Africa, Musk taught himself to code. By the time he was 12, he sold the source code for his first video game for $500.

Just before his 18th birthday, Musk moved to Canada and worked a series of hard labor jobs, including shoveling grain, cutting logs, and eventually cleaning out the boiler room in a lumber mill for $18 an hour — an impressive wage in 1989.

The best cat litter

  • Cats are picky about the litter in their litter boxes, so it's important to choose a formula that's healthy for your cat and easy to clean.
  • Because there are so many different types of cat litter out there, it can be a challenge to make the right choice.
  • Our top pick is Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat Ultra-Premium Clumping Litter because it's a hard-clumping litter that traps liquids and odor without generating tons of dust.

Though cats can certainly be difficult at times, they are a low-maintenance pet in the sense that you don't have to take them outside for a walk to do their business. Cats are fastidiously clean animals that spend hours grooming themselves each day and they do their business in a litter box. It makes your job as a pet owner easier — you simply have to scoop the litter a few times a week and change it out as needed.

When it comes to your cat's litter, there are many options to choose from, and each cat has its own unique preferences for texture, fragrance, and absorbency. The best cat litter overall

Precious Cat/Business Insider

Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat Ultra-Premium Clumping Litter uses an unscented, dust-free formula that traps liquid and odors to keep your cat happy and your home smelling fresh.

Although cats are naturally very clean, the litter box can get messy if you don't choose the right litter. The perfect cat litter forms hard clumps to make cleanup a breeze, it's dust-free and low-tracking, and it controls odors for days at a time. And that ideal litter is the Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat Ultra-Premium Clumping Litter

Made from traditional clay materials, this litter creates hard clumps from your cat's urine and feces that are easy to scoop up. It is unscented and dust-free so it won't cause respiratory problems, and its unique heavy clay granules help to reduce tracking. Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat Ultra-Premium Clumping Litter is surprisingly inexpensive as well, making it ideal for multi-cat households.

The cat litter is super-affordable, and its hard-clumping action traps both liquids and odor, helping to keep your house fresh and clean. It can be used in sifting litter boxes as well for easy cleanup, which Wirecutter noted when naming it their top pick.

Pros: Hard-clumping formula traps liquids and odor, unscented, dust-free and hypoallergenic formula, low-tracking, works well for multi-cat households, very inexpensive

Cons: Only available in large bags 18 pounds and up, lack of deodorizers may not mask smells as well as scented litters, not biodegradable

The best clumping cat litter

World's Best/Business Insider

Made from all-natural corn granules, World's Best Cat Litter Clumping Formula is biodegradable, forms hard clumps for easy cleanup, isn't dusty, and offers excellent odor control.

When it comes to cat litter, there are two main types to consider: clumping and non-clumping. Clumping cat litter works by absorbing liquid, turning it into solid clumps that can be scooped up and thrown away. This type of litter is usually low in dust and can be great for odor control, though some clumping litters are not biodegradable. Our top pick for clumping cat litter is World's Best Cat Litter Clumping Formula.

Made entirely from renewable, whole-kernel corn, World's Best Cat Litter Clumping Formula is both environmentally-friendly and biodegradable. The hard-clumping action makes scooping the litter box a breeze, and, because the granules are made from corn and not clay, they can be flushed or composted. This litter absorbs liquid quickly and controls odors for days at a time. It is also very low in dust, which is beneficial for your cat's respiratory health.

A detailed review from Pet Helpful speaks to the hard-clumping action, though the review does note that the clumps may dry out and crumble over time if you don't scoop them within a few days. This formula is fairly pricey compared to other litters, but it lasts a long time and it controls odors well if you scoop it often.

Pros: Hard-clumping formula makes cleanup easy, biodegradable and environmentally-friendly, made from all-natural corn, can be flushed or composted, can be used in mechanical and sifting litter boxes, offers excellent odor control, dust-free

Cons: Fairly expensive compared to other clumping litters, some cats dislike the texture or scent of the litter, some cats have trouble with tracking, clumps may dry out and crumble after a few days

The best newspaper cat litter

Purina/Business Insider

Made from 100% recycled paper, Purina Yesterday's News Unscented Litter is a gentle, highly absorbent non-clumping cat litter that is great for the environment.

One of the main benefits of clumping cat litter is, of course, the fact that it makes scooping the litter box easy. There are, however, some benefits that non-clumping litter has to offer. For example, non-clumping litters can be made from a variety of materials including natural materials like wood, corn, and grass, which might be important for cats who are sensitive to clay. Some of these materials also have a naturally pleasant smell, and, for cleanup, you can save yourself the hassle of scooping by simply dumping the entire litter box and refilling it.

Though there are many non-clumping litters to choose from, our top pick is Purina Yesterday's News Unscented Litter. Made from 100% recycled paper materials, our testing revealed that this litter is almost completely dust-free and biodegradable. It works quickly, absorbing up to three times the liquid of clay litter by volume, and it lasts longer than non-clumping pine litters. Purina Yesterday's News Unscented Litter is unscented so it won't irritate your cat's respiratory system and it is super gentle on his paws.

We're All About Cats tested this litter, and found that in comparison to clay litters, it's up to three times as absorbent and is nearly dust-free and non-tracking.

Pros: Made from recycled paper materials, three times more absorbent than clay litter by volume, unscented and 99.7% dust-free, soft pellets are gentle on paws, lasts longer than pine pellets, completely biodegradable

Cons: Paper pellets may start to dissolve after absorbing liquid, odor control is limited which may require frequent cleaning, paper materials do not clump at all, some liquid may bypass the pellets
