You can now get your AirPods case engraved with an emoji — here's how to do it (AAPL)

  • Apple now allows you to personalize your AirPods case with an engraved emoji.
  • But you can only choose from a selection of 31 emojis, which include several animals among other popular symbols like a fist bump, a heart, and a robot.
  • Apple has offered the ability to add a text engraving to your AirPods case for a while, but the option to do so with emoji appears to be new.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Apple's AirPods only come in one color, but the company does offer another way to personalize your wireless earbuds — by adding an engraving to their charging case.

Now, Apple is expanding this customization option with the ability to engrave an emoji into the case, as blogs such as 9to5Mac and MacRumors first noticed. Previously, Apple only allowed text inscriptions.

However, there are a limited number of emojis available to choose from. Options include the standard smiley face, thumbs up, fist bump, heart, and animals such as the unicorn, cat, dog, and bear among other symbols. Like the text engravings, the emoji options are available for free across all of Apple's AirPods offerings, including the $250 AirPods Pro, $160 AirPods, and $200 AirPods with the wireless charging case.

AirPods have been hugely successful for Apple since the product debuted in 2016. The product has boosted the company's growth in the wearables industry, helping to offset declining iPhone revenue. As they've grown in popularity, accessory makers have released dozens of different types of cases, covers, and other add-ons for Apple's cord-free earbuds. Some retailers like Nordstrom, for example, have even started selling straps to prevent you from losing a single AirPod — which Apple charges $69 to replace for a standard AirPod and $89 for the Pro.

If you're purchasing a pair of AirPods and want to add an emoji to the charging case, here's how to do it:

Navigate to the AirPods product page on Apple's website.

Apple

From Apple's product page, choose the model you want to purchase.

Then press the "Personalize it for free" option.

Apple

You'll see this button just above the "Add to bag" option on Apple's website.

Choose the emoji you want to add to your AirPods case and hit "Save."

The Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi offers generous rewards in several different spending categories, but that doesn't mean it's the best card for Costco purchases. The reality is that there are several different cards that may let you earn more rewards over time depending on where you spend the most.

At the end of the day, the Costco Anywhere Visa really stands out in terms of the rewards it offers on gas purchases worldwide. If you're someone who drives long distances or commutes to work, this card could be an excellent choice for your wallet for that reason alone thanks to its bonus for gas purchases.

WeWork cofounder Miguel McKelvey's NYC townhouse is on the market, but the apartment's heated floors and $21 million pricetag aren't the most outlandish features of the listing.

McKelvey's three-floor apartment near Manhattan's Washington Square Park was recently listed for $21 million, as the New York Post first reported. It didn't take long for people to discover additional photos of the apartment, including one photo that shows two pieces of eye-catching artwork on the wall that are colorful in more ways than one.

It took me almost a decade to pay off $8,000 of student loan debt, but after refinancing I can't believe how fast it's going down

When I graduated from college in 2009, I had around $65,000 in private student loans. Rather than the state school my parents wanted me to go to, I opted for a small, private school out of state, which cost nearly three times as much per year.

Thankfully, I had a number of scholarships, and my grandparents contributed money they had set aside for my education. I was also able to graduate a year early, which saved me about $25,000 in tuition.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW: Your favorite '90s pop stars

Posted: 03 Jan 2020 10:13 AM PST

The '90s was a huge decade for music, with singers like Britney Spears and Mariah Carey, as well as boy bands like NSYNC, becoming household names.

The decade also launched the careers of stars like Jennifer Lopez, Mandy Moore, and Christina Aguilera — singers who are still doing exciting things even after the 90s heyday.

See what some of the biggest names in '90s pop music are up to today.

Britney Spears rose to fame in the late 1990s.

The LIFE Picture Collection via Getty Images

After the release of her debut single "...Baby One More Time" in 1998, as well as her debut album in 1999, Spears instantly became a pop superstar. The music video for "...Baby One More Time," which features the singer dressed as a Catholic schoolgirl, is one of the most iconic music videos from the '90s.

And even though Spears would go on to release several more successful albums in the 2000s, her iconic career definitely began in the 1990s.

Despite a rocky past few years, Spears is still making music and headlining shows.

J. Merritt/Getty Images for GLAAD

Spears has remained in the spotlight for most of the 2000s, undergoing a public divorce and custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline, as well as a struggle with her mental illness. The singer has headlined tours and Las Vegas residencies as recently as 2018, but the past few months, fans have grown worried again about her mental state, even starting a social media movement called #FreeBritney that aims to remove her from the control of her father

Spears has denied the conspiracy theories, saying speculation about her life has "gotten out of control."

Jennifer Lopez got her big break when she starred in the 1997 movie "Selena," about the murdered Chicana singer.

The LIFE Picture Collection via Getty Images

The singer, actress, and dancer got her start dancing in music videos, like Janet Jackson's 1993 video for "That's The Way Love Goes." Lopez also appeared on the popular sketch show "In Living Color" as a dancer, but really got her big break playing Tejana singer Selena in the 1997 biopic.

She dropped her debut album, "On the 6," in 1999. Much like Spears, Lopez's debut single "If You Had My Love" became an instant hit, and made the singer a household name.

A new anti-robocall law pummels spam callers with fines and pressures phone companies to stop robocalls in their tracks — but it won't end them just yet

  • President Trump on Monday signed the TRACED Act, which will increase fines for robocalls and add other measures that experts hope will decrease phone scams over time.
  • Americans receive billions of robocalls each year, and the technology to make robocalls has become cheaper and easier to access over recent years.
  • The new law also requires that phone companies create systems to block spam calls from phones without charging consumers extra.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

A new anti-robocall law signed by President Trump on Monday could make spam calls a little less frequent in the near future, The Associated Press reported — but don't expect robocalls to disappear fully anytime soon.

The law, called the TRACED Act, won't stop robocalls today, but it does give the Federal Communications Commission more tools to prosecute spam callers. Among other rules, the law increases fines for robocalls, increases time for legal prosecution, and requires phone companies to create systems that recognize spoofed calls and stop them before they reach the consumer, according to TechCrunch.

The best kitchen gadgets for eating healthy

Posted: 03 Jan 2020 10:10 AM PST

  • Eating healthy can be a challenge, but it doesn't have to be if you have the right kitchen tools to help you prep good meals.
  • From a spiralizer to a pair of herb scissors, we've rounded up a few essentials that everyone should have in their kitchen.
  • If you don't consider yourself a cook but still want to eat healthier in the new year, check out our guide to the best healthy meal delivery services.

In a world of takeout, fast food, and nuke-em-in-the-microwave meals, you might be spending less and less time in your kitchen. And that's a shame, because not only does home cooking done right taste a lot better than prepackaged food or meals bought on the run, it's frequently healthier and more economical, as well.

If you need some encouragement to get back in the kitchen in the new year, we're here to help. We've rounded up several kitchen gadgets that admittedly you could live without, but you probably won't want to. Each one helps to make your food prep or cooking time a little easier, a little faster, a little healthier, or a little bit more fun. Best of all, none of them are expensive or complicated.

These gadgets are handy tools to bring back the joy of cooking and keep you healthy. Many of them inspire you to eat more fresh veggies, herbs, and fruit, while others help you prep meals with fewer oils and carbs.

Here are the best kitchen gadgets for eating healthy you can buy:

Updated on 1/3/2020 by Jen Gushue: Updated pricing, links, and formatting.

The best gadget for fresh veggie noodles

Spiralizer

The Spiralizer 5-Blade Vegetable Slicer turns humble veggies and fruits into noodles, curly toppings for salads, and healthy garnishes for any dish.

Zoodles and other veggie noodles are one of the easiest ways to integrate veggies into dishes you already love. They taste good, provide the base for whatever tasty sauce you'd like to pour on top, and pack a powerful punch of nutrients without wheat or other grains you might want to avoid. You can buy pre-spiralized zoodles in many markets these days, but they are expensive. Save your dollars, and do your own spiralizing instead.

Just choose one of the five cutlery-grade stainless-steel blade plates included with the Spiralizer 5-Blade Vegetable Slicer, clamp your veggie or fruit into position, and turn the crank. Voila, you've got thin curls of veggie deliciousness that are perfect for stir-frying, soups, salads, pasta dishes, bowl lunches, or just about anything else you can cook.

The spiralizer comes with five different blades, and each one produces a slightly different thickness, twist, or shred. The spiralizer holds tight to your countertop with suction-cup feet, cleans up in the dishwasher, and works beautifully to spiralize just about any fruit or veggie that's firm, including zucchini, sweet potatoes, yellow squash, carrots, ginger, broccoli stalks, apples, pears, and cabbage.

Pros: A great way to add interest to vegetables and cut back on wheat and other carb consumption, includes three free recipe eBooks

Cons: You might eventually tire of the zoodle trend

The best gadget for quick salads

EZ Life Products

The EZ Salad Cutting Bowl takes all the fussy chopping and slicing out of salad prep so you can eat salad more often.

If too many of your lunches come from vending machines or drive-thru burger joints, you can healthy-up your diet by choosing salad at least a couple times per week — and not one of the budget-depleting ones from the chain up the block. The EZ Salad Cutting Bowl makes it easy to quickly mix up a great salad at home.

Just add your favorite mix of veggies to the EZ Salad Cutting Bowl – lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, cabbage, celery, tomatoes, or any others you like – rinse them right in the bowl, close the bowl's base, turn, slice through the bowl's slits, turn again, slice once more, and then open up the cutting bowl and enjoy your chopped salad. You can make fruit salad, as well, or slice anything you can think of into bite-size chunks.

The EZ Salad Cutting Bowl is made of sturdy, BPA-free plastic, and easily washes in the dishwasher.

Pros: An easy way to make tasty salads or chop veggies for use in other dishes

Cons: You'll need a knife long enough to reach across the entire bowl

The best gadget for healthy baking

Velesco

With the Velesco Silicone Baking Mats, stuck-on baked goods, meats, or vegetables are a thing of the past, and you'll cut down on oils and fats, as well.

I use my aluminum baking sheets quite a bit, and not only for baking. Sheet-pan meals, heating up frozen foods, cooking bacon in the oven, and toasting seeds are all fairly common activities in my household. Scrubbing the sheets, however, was never much fun. It took me a while to discover the joys of silicone baking mats, but once I did, there was no turning back.

I've had my set of two Velesco Silicone Baking Mats for a year or so now, and despite frequent use, they are still unstained and have no signs of wear or tear. They fit nicely in my 16x12-inch baking sheets, and wash-up quickly with just a swirl in the sink and a little dishwashing soap.

I also use them to line my roasting pans; they fit nearly perfectly. No more cooking-oil sprays — which leave impossible-to-remove buildup on your cookware — no more soaking and scrubbing to remove cooked-on food, and no more greasing the pan before I use it. Food also cooks evenly and removes easily from the food-grade silicone material.

The half-sheet baking mats are also perfect for rolling out cookie dough or kneading bread, rolling meatballs, or making candy. Go ahead and put the mats in your dishwasher, microwave, oven, or freezer and they will come out unscathed. They are also affordable when compared to the trendy Silpat brand.

Pros: No need for grease, butter, or oil on your baking sheets or roasting pans, and foods won't stick, even if burned

Cons: These are only baking sheet liners, 16x12-inch baking sheets are sold separately

The banking industry is in the grips of an identity crisis. Leaders of the world's largest banks — such as Citi, BBVA, and Goldman Sachs — have begun describing themselves as technology companies with banking licenses.

However, this description is still aspirational. Executing the vision will require billions of dollars in investments, the restructuring of teams, a reimagining of the entire banking technology stack, and the adoption of a far more customer-centric business view.

Aerospace and defense companies are among the few groups of stocks rising in Friday trading, with escalating tensions between the US and Iran boosting the war-driven industries.

The S&P 500 Aerospace & Defense Industry Index climbed as much as 1.5%, while major indexes slid roughly 1% at their intraday lows.

A US airstrike killed top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani on Thursday, leading global stocks to drop while gold and oil spiked. The attack came "at the direction of" President Trump, according to the Defense Department, and was meant to deter "future Iranian attack plans."

Iranian officials quickly responded to the strike, with the nation's supreme leader warning "harsh retaliation is waiting" for the US.

"Trump through his gamble has dragged the US into the most dangerous situation in the region," a senior advisor to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said. "Whoever put his foot beyond the red line should be ready to face its consequences."

All three major US stock indexes are down as traders flee the volatile market, but a select few firms are surging on the heightened chance of armed conflict between the US and Iran.

NFL Wild Card Weekend — Our predictions for who wins the first round of the playoffs

Posted: 03 Jan 2020 09:40 AM PST

russell wilson carson wentzMatt Rourke/AP

The NFL playoffs are here!

Saturday kicks off Wild Card Weekend, as the four AFC teams battle before the NFC teams face off on Sunday. Wild Card Weekend is always prone to upsets, and this year's matchups feel even less certain than usual, as the games could go in any direction.

The Sports Insider team made its predictions for how the games will play out. See who we think will advance in the playoffs this weekend below.

Buffalo Bills at Houston Texans

Eric Christian Smith/AP

Cork Gaines: Bills. This Bills team is going to get shut down once they face a good defense. The Texans are not that team. Yes, they will have J.J. Watt back, but it is hard to believe he is going to be at full-throttle the entire game after missing eight games.

Scott Davis: Bills. The Texans have played up and down to their competition this season, their defense is weak, Deshaun Watson hasn't played his best football down the stretch, and the Texans enter the playoffs with more injury questions than Buffalo.

Tyler Lauletta: Texans. Depending on the health of Will Fuller and which side of the bed the Bills defense wakes up on, this game could go either way. But in a coin flip, give me the team that has DeAndre Hopkins.

Meredith Cash: Texans. I could see Deshaun Watson breaking through and leading the Texans on a surprise playoff run in his third season under center. With J.J. Watt making his return and a chance to vie for the franchise's first divisional-round victory on the line, I'm taking Houston to outmaneuver an elite Buffalo defense.

Tennessee Titans at New England Patriots

Elise Amendola/AP

Cork Gaines: Patriots. The Titans were one of the five or six best teams in the NFL in the second half of the season. The Patriots were not. If this game were in Nashville, I would be tempted to take the Titans. It is not. Pats will win, but this will be a better game than some might realize.

Scott Davis: Patriots. Ryan Tannehill and the red-hot Titans offense are due for some regression, and I believe in Bill Belichick's ability to scheme up a plan to slow them down. Tom Brady has given us reason to doubt him this season, but ultimately, in the playoffs, I want to see him fail to meet the challenge before betting against him.

Tyler Lauletta: Titans. Ryan Tannehill outplays Tom Brady, the once-dominant Patriots defense shrinks to a shell of itself as they against the Dolphin in Week 17, Derrick Henry runs for 227 yards and three touchdowns, cats befriend dogs, and the Patriots fail to play in the AFC Championship for the first time since 2010.

Meredith Cash: Patriots. Ryan Tannehill has put on quite a show in Tennessee since taking over quarterback, making the Titans a very trendy — and tempting — pick to pull off the upset. But even with rumors swirling that Saturday night could be the Tom Brady's final stint at Gillette Stadium, I'm still not ready to write off the 42-year-old legend.

Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints

Mark Zaleski/AP

Cork Gaines: Saints. Dalvin Cook is said to be ready to go against the Saints. It won't be enough. The Saints are the best team in the NFC right now.

Scott Davis: Saints. Drew Brees and the Saints offense lit the world on fire over their last seven games, averaging 36 points per game, while Brees threw 22 touchdowns to one interception. That's a lot of fire-power for any team to counter, let alone in the Superdome.

Tyler Lauletta: Saints. New Orleans is on a roll right now and Kirk Cousins has never won a big game in his career. You like that?

Meredith Cash: Saints. I have yet to see Kirk Cousins show up in big moments. He struggles in primetime and, heading into this season, won just five of 25 games against teams that finished the year with a winning record. With Drew Brees and company waging a revenge tour after last year's disaster, I suspect Minnesota's 2019 season will end just as it started: full of tumult and questions about Cousins' value.

This year, cars such as the Jaguar I-PACE and the Lamborghini Urus made the lists. The Chevrolet Corvette even appeared twice with Motor Trend and the Detroit Free Press both calling it the best car of the year.

However, not all of the picks on the list were comprised of luxury drives: pickup truck RAM 1500 took the coveted award with Business Insider's own Car of the Year title, while the Mazda 3 won with the Women's World Car of the Year.

Check out all of the cars that won Car of the Year for 2019:

RAM 1500

Business Insider selected the RAM 1500 pickup because it's the "most plush-driving and provocatively designed full-size pickup on sale today, making it the perfect full-size for the modern buyer," Business Insider wrote while describing its Car of the Year choice.

The RAM also has "robust" specs and a four-wheel independent suspension that provides durability to the pickup truck, according to BI.

The 2020 RAM 1500 has a starting price of $31,895.

Robb Report claims the first super-SUV is a "class-defying breed" because of its six drive modes and aerodynamically optimized drive and handling, according to Robb Report.

"The power and strength of the Urus combined with a magical interior make this an exceptional vehicle," one judge told Robb Report. "It has multiple personalities, and I love them all."

The 2019 Urus has an MSRP of $200,000.

The Detroit Free Press claims that while the Corvette still has its iconic lights and fenders, the car is "better than those who dreamt of it could have expected."

The daily newspaper says this is because the engine — which places 60% of the weight on the rear wheels — outfits the car with a zero-to-60 mph time of less than 3 seconds with the Z51 package.

The Corvette was also named car of the year by Motor Trend. One of the guest judges initially noted that the vehicle was quiet for a supercar.

The magazine also claims the Corvette "rides surprisingly well" and has a high-quality and well-designed interior cabin with comfortable seats and multiple mode selectors.

The 2020 Chevy Corvette starts at $58,900.
