I rode Africa's first superfast bullet train that could go from New York to Washington, DC, in 90 minutes, and I understand why it's controversial

  • In November 2018, Morocco unveiled the first high-speed railway system in Africa, connecting the coastal city of Tangier with the capital, Rabat, and Casablanca, the country's business hub — and eventually the tourist destinations of Marrakech and Agadir.
  • In December 2018, I rode the train roughly the distance between New York City and Washington, DC, in two hours.
  • The ride, which takes over five hours on conventional rail, is set to be cut down to 90 minutes.
  • I found the experience delightful, with cheap first-class tickets, plush comfortable seats, air-conditioned cabins, plenty of leg room, and an interior design that evoked rail's golden age.
  • While the $2 billion train system is impressive, it's hard not to think of the robust public debate happening in Morocco that has left some critics questioning the economic viability of the train.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

People often visit Morocco for a glimpse of the past.

There are snake charmers and monkey tamers putting on a show for tourists in the central square of Marrakech, and winding labyrinths of the country's old medinas. There are remote mountain villages that make you feel like the first foreigner to have ever stepped inside, and golden, timeless seas of sand.

One thing most people don't visit Morocco for, however, is a glimpse of the future. The Moroccan government and its king, Mohammed VI, are hoping that will soon change with the opening of a high-speed rail system.

Opened in November after over a decade in development, the Al Boraq is Africa's first high-speed train. Morocco is hoping that foreign investors and Moroccans will look to the project as evidence that the country is on the fast track to progress. Whether that is actually the case is up for debate.

"In French, it's called 'les grands chantiers,' the closest translation of which is 'grand design,'" Zouhair Ait Benhamou, a doctoral candidate at Paris Nanterre University who studies big-ticket projects like Morocco's high-speed rail, told The Guardian in December 2018.

For some Moroccans, the train is an expensive folly whose funds would have been better spent on overcrowded schools or the overtaxed medical system. For others, the belief is that the benefits of having futuristic infrastructure will "trickle down" to the rest of Morocco. Only time will tell.

After riding similar trains in China, Russia, and Korea, I knew I had to give Morocco's version a try. Here's what it was like to ride first-class from Tangier to Casablanca.

This article was first published in January 2019.

I arrived at the Tanger Ville Railway Station in the northern coastal city of Tangier about a half hour before my train at 5 p.m.

Annie Zheng / Business Insider

Though the station opened in 2003 with regular rail, Morocco spent $37 million to renovate it and add a building for a new high-speed train system.

Source: Morocco World News

While Morocco already has an extensive rail network that serves 40 million passengers, the country has been developing high-speed rail for a decade.

The $2.3 billion project has been funded with nearly $1 billion from France and $500 million from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates.

The first leg of the project — from Tangier to Casablanca, Morocco's business hub — opened in November.

Plans are underway to extend the line to the tourist hotspots Marrakech and Agadir in the next few years, and eventually Fez.

Many analysts have suggested that the bullet train is about more than the revenue it will generate — it's "a flagship project that enables Morocco to shine in Africa," one geopolitical analyst told The Guardian.

The rise and fall of Bed Bath & Beyond, one of America's most iconic big box retailers

Posted: 21 Jan 2020 09:51 AM PST

bed bath and beyondGetty Images

Once the golden child of big-box stores, Bed Bath & Beyond is now struggling to stay afloat.

The retailer will shutter 44 stores across eight states in the next year as it attempts to course-correct in the wake of disappointing sales and executive turmoil

Bed Bath & Beyond was once a leading home goods retailer, appealing to shoppers across the nation with its strategy of abundance. The beloved store, which lined strip malls across the country, became known for its huge assortment of products spanning every color and style imaginable.

Over the years, it became a go-to destination for just about anything and everything for the home and — true to its name — beyond.

We took a closer a look at Bed Bath & Beyond's rise from a small linen store in New Jersey to a major national retail chain now on the brink of collapse.

Bed Bath & Beyond was founded in 1971 in New Jersey by Warren Eisenberg and Leonard Feinstein.

Shoshy Ciment/Business Insider

The duo had formerly worked in management at Arlans, a local discount chain, and saw opportunity for growth in the bed and bath categories.

"We had witnessed the department store shakeout, and knew that specialty stores were going to be the next wave of retailing," Feinstein told the trade publication Chain Store Executive in 1993.

It was originally called Bed 'n Bath, to reflect its specialty linens and bath products. The company would later rebrand to Bed Bath & Beyond in 1987.

During the course of the 1970s, Bed Bath & Beyond expanded to 17 locations, primarily in the greater New York area and California.

  • The country has had limited access to funds since governments around the world enacted sanctions to try to force the country's embattled president, Nicolás Maduro, from power after he faced accusations of rigging elections.

The best women's underwear

Posted: 21 Jan 2020 09:50 AM PST

  • You have to wear it every day, so you better make sure your underwear is the most comfortable clothing you own.
  • Tommy John makes the most comfortable women's underwear we've ever worn, and we've tried a lot of underwear.
  • If you're looking for a bra to go with your new underwear, check out our guide to the best bras.

Underwear. You won't give it a second thought if it's fabulously comfortable, but if it's anything less than that, it's all you'll be able to think about all the livelong day. And let's be honest — you're way too busy to waste any brain space on something as trivial as underwear. But thankfully, there are plenty of options these days that are as comfortable as they are playful, and you really can't ask for more when it comes to your undergarments.

Long gone are the days of a one size fits all approach to your lingerie. Today, you have plenty of styles, cuts, patterns, and sizes to make you feel confident and sexy from the moment you begin to get dressed.

When it comes to deciding what underwear is best for you, trying really is believing. Luckily, most online underwear companies today have a satisfaction guarantee, so if you receive a pair and realize that the material isn't what you thought it would be, or the fit isn't quite right, don't try to force yourself into liking them. You deserve better than that.

Speaking of material, that's certainly key to keep in mind when selecting the best undergarments for your lifestyle. Are you constantly moving around for a living, or are you generally sitting at a desk? Do you need something a bit more breathable, or are you seeking fuller coverage? Ultimately, you'll need to be sure that whatever material you're working with is durable. After all, these are garments that you'll be putting through the wash a lot, so be sure it can stand up to the spin cycle (unless you want to be like Justin Bieber and throw your underwear away after a single wash).

Hand in hand with material comes the underwear style. If you're always slipping into figure-hugging dresses, you may want to consider a thong. If you're really just looking for something to lounge around in on the weekend, perhaps consider a boyshort.

No matter what you choose from our favorite options, we're confident that you'll feel well-suited to take on the world and anything it throws your way.

Here is the best underwear for women:

Updated on 1/21/2020 by Jen Gushue: Updated prices, links, and formatting.

The best overall

Tommy John

Tommy John has mastered the art of underwear for women with its Second Skin Brief, Air Cheeky, and Air Thong.

For too long women's underwear has been about sex appeal instead of comfort, but no longer. Tommy John's underwear is hands down the most comfortable underwear you can buy.

Tommy John may have started off with men's underwear, but its new Second Skin and Air underwear collections for women prove that the company's designers know a thing or two about what women want in a great pair of underwear. That means no scrunching, chafing, bunching, or riding up. And boy does Tommy John's underwear deliver on its promise that there will be "no adjustment needed."

The Insider Picks team tested out both the Second Skin and Air underwear collections and loved every pair. From the sexy thong and cheeky styles to the practical and attractive briefs, Tommy John's underwear is super comfortable.

I particularly loved the Second Skin Brief, which is made from 90% micro-modal and 10% Spandex. It gives full coverage everywhere you need it without embarrassing panty lines. Most importantly, it looks good, feels great, and never needs adjusting throughout the day.

The entire Second Skin collection is made from the same material, so you can choose the boyshorts, thong, or cheeky instead of the brief, too. Tommy John has lots of color options, too, including a nice deep purple, a deep rosy pink, white, black, nude, and more.

The Air collection is fantastic for hotter weather or workouts because it's made with improved ventilation, moisture-wicking, and deodorizing fabric. The Air underwear comes in briefs, cheeky, and thongs that are made from 77% Nylon mesh and 23% Spandex.

I really liked the cheeky Air underwear for its comfortable fit and ventilated fabric. My fellow co-workers were also fans of the Air thong for its barely-there feel.

The only real downside here is the price, because at $22 and up, this underwear is very expensive. We recommend going with a value pack to minimize the cost a bit. Besides, you're going to want to wear these every day, so you'll need more than one pair. — Malarie Gokey

Pros: So comfortable, great fit, fun colors, many styles, innovative breathable fabric, no adjustments

Cons: Expensive

The best cotton underwear

Everlane's underwear collection goes back to basics with supremely soft Supima cotton that's ethically sourced and transparently priced.

If you don't want to spend $20+ on one pair of underwear, you're in luck, because Everlane just created its first underwear collection. The online company is known for its transparent pricing and ethically produced clothing, so you can feel good about the underwear you're buying.

Everlane's underwear collection features bikini, thong, hipster, and high-rise hipster styles that are all made with Supima cotton that's grown in the United States and made into underwear at ethical factories. The cotton's extra-long fibers are super soft on your skin and the material is breathable.

We at Insider Picks reviewed Everlane's underwear, and we loved it. The high-rise hipster was a group favorite with its full coverage and comfortable feel. I also personally loved the regular hipster style, which is both sexy and comfortable. Those of us who prefer thongs were also favorably impressed with Everlane's take on that classic sexy style.

You can choose from heather grey, powder pink, white, and black colors. All of Everlane's underwear is completely basic, or as the ad campaign says, "No frills. No bows. No bullsh*t." It's your everyday underwear. It's made for you and puts your comfort above anything else.

Perhaps best of all, one pair of Everlane underwear costs $12, which is nearly half the price you'd pay for a pair of Tommy John's underwear. You can get a three-pack for $27, which averages out to $9 a pair.

If you're looking for affordable, high-quality underwear that's made ethically from the best material, Everlane's Supima cotton underwear is for you. —Malarie Gokey

Pros: Supima cotton is soft, comfortable, breathable, variety of styles, comfortable elastic, ethical production, transparent pricing

Cons: Only basic colors

The best seamless underwear

If you're all about forgetting that you're wearing underwear, Commando is about as close as you're going to get.

Sometimes, the name is all you need. Underwear from Commando will make you look (and feel) as though you're not wearing undergarments in the best way possible. People Magazine notes that "you'll never fall victim to pesky panty lines ever again" with this lingerie, and really, what more could you want from your underwear?

Commando has one of the wider selections of styles when it comes to online panty retailers. You can select your underwear by type, with options including high rise, active, boy short, and thong, to name a few. Alternatively, you can filter your search results based on materials, which are also wide-ranging on the Commando site. Options include chic mesh, signature microfiber, perfect stretch, luxe, and lace satin, among others.

With the exception of a few styles, colors in the Commando line are generally muted and quite classic. So if you need to find a pair of underwear for the cocktail dress you're wearing to the charity gala, you'll probably want to pull out a pair of Commandos.

New York Magazine says that Commando ticks all the boxes when it comes to both comfort and functionality, and this assessment certainly rang true for me as well. As Jasmine Caccamo, professional stylist noted, "These seamless undies create a super-flawless fit and everything looks perfect — whether I'm wearing them under leggings or a silk cami dress."  — Lulu Chang

Pros: No-show design, wide selection of styles and materials, no riding up

Cons: Some styles are expensive

6 things your drill sergeant can do that are worse than getting punched

Posted: 21 Jan 2020 09:22 AM PST

drill sergeantUS Army Reserve

  • Think of boot camp or basic training, and the ever-present menace of the drill sergeant comes to mind.
  • For all their physicality, the worst things are what drill sergeants can make you do, not what they can do to you.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

There's probably a part of us that is worried about our drill sergeant, drill instructor, training instructor, and RDCs are going to lose their cool and just pummel us into basic trainee mush.

If you've ever seen their faces close enough to smell what they had for breakfast, they were probably really ripping into you, and that's enough to make anyone wonder: Am I in danger?

In reality, that's probably the least of your worries.

1. Give you a nickname for the rest of your life.

US Marine Corps

There's a good chance you're going to tech school, AIT, or whatever your branch of service calls career training with some of the guys or gals from your basic training unit.

While many of us can safely walk away from basic training saying to ourselves, "Well, at least no one saw that," gaining a funny nickname from your training instructors is the kind of thing that could follow you your whole career — and it's not cool unless it's a call sign.

Nothing would be worse than retiring after 20 years and everyone calling you Chief "Chunkin.'"

2. Make you chug your entire canteen.

It's not easy to chug that much water in one breath, especially without getting it all over yourself, but sometimes, when a grown man is yelling at you, demanding you do it that way, that's what you have to do.

This is the most military punishment since push-ups were created, except this one is dumb. Watching a recruit open their throat and try to take a whole canteen like it's a beer shotgun is the like watching someone stand to be waterboarded. It did not look fun.

Then, of course, 15 minutes later, you have to ask that same drill sergeant to use the latrine.

3. Force you to use your mattress as a scrub brush.

Cpl. Octavia Davis/USMC

The first thing training instructors are is funny.

Then, when the bizarre punishments happen to you, those same people become awful and absurd. There are few greater absurd punishments than watching a platoon scrub a floor with a wet mattress on a Sunday.

God help you if that's your mattress.

Regardless if you love watching the Oscars or love to hate-watch it, the highlight is always when there's an upset winner.

With months of being told why a person or film is going to win, there's nothing like watching the genuine surprise and spontaneous, authentic reaction when someone seems to steal a trophy on Hollywood's biggest prize. That can range from Roberto Benigni balancing himself on seats after winning best actor in 1999 to "Moonlight" shocking the world in 2017.

The feeling going into the 92nd Academy Awards, airing February 9, is that a lot of the major categories are going to go the way the pundits are predicting. But there could be a shock or two, like the best supporting actress category (nominees include Laura Dern for "Marriage Story," Scarlett Johansson for "Jojo Rabbit," and Kathy Bates for "Richard Jewell") or best animated feature ("Missing Link," "Toy Story 4").

While we await what surprises this year's show has in store, we've ranked the 23 biggest upsets in Oscar history:

23. Marcia Gay Harden won best supporting actress for "Pollock" (2001)

Sony Pictures Classics

A big indicator of who will win on Oscar night comes from the nominations and wins before that night, which is what makes Harden's win so shocking. Her performance as Lee Krasner did not get recognized at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, or BAFTAs. But her name was called on the biggest night.

22. Olivia Colman beat out Glenn Close and Lady Gaga to win best actress (2019)

Fox Searchlight

Olivia Colman walked up to the Oscar stage as shocked as everyone else to accept her best actress Oscar at the 91st Academy Awards. With Glenn Close being considered the front runner, having won the Golden Globe for her performance in "The Wife," and Lady Gaga not far behind in the odds thanks to her role in "A Star Is Born," the Colman win was certainly a surprise. But it was much deserved, as she was fantastic as Queen Anne in the movie.

21. Then 11-year-old Anna Paquin won best supporting actress for "The Piano" (1994)

Rarely does the Academy award children, but at 11 years old, Paquin took the award, beating out Emma Thompson ("In the Name of the Father"), Winona Ryder ("The Age of Innocence"), Rosie Perez ("Fearless"), and Holly Hunter ("The Firm"), who was also nominated in the best actress category for playing opposite Paquin in "The Piano." Hunter won in that category.

  • On Monday, analysts at Canaccord Genuity reduced their market and tech sector views to neutral from positive as they see a potential pullback coming in stocks.

  • Still, the analysts said they'd rotate back into a more bullish stance "pending a resolution of the extreme overbought level of the major market indices."

  • Warning: Minor spoilers lie ahead for season 2 of "Sex Education."
  • Netflix's hit British series "Sex Education" is back for a second season — and it's brilliant.
  • Like the first season, "Sex Education" tackles huge topics like sexual harassment and asexuality in a way that is not only respectful, but wise and enriching.
  • It's also brilliantly written and acted by a superb, diverse cast.

While people raved about standout performances in "The Crown" and Joe's troubling hotness in "You," I was looking forward to the return of one Netflix original more than the rest: "Sex Education."

As Sophie Gilbert wrote previously for The Atlantic, season one combined many elements of already successful Netflix shows — like an '80s aesthetic and soundtrack from "Stranger Things" and slightly surreal teen romance elements from "The End of the F***ing World" — and weaved them together in a way that "works so well is almost annoying."
