Anti-vaxxers can no longer raise money on GoFundMe

Posted: 22 Mar 2019 08:40 AM PDT

GoFundMe is cracking down on anti-vaxxers.

The popular fundraising website says it will no longer allow anti-vaccine groups and activists to raise money to spread anti-vaccination conspiracies on its platform, according to a statement provided to The Daily Beast

"Campaigns raising money to promote misinformation about vaccines violate GoFundMe’s terms of service and will be removed from the platform,” said GoFundMe spokesperson Bobby Whithorne in a similar statement provided to Mashable.

The company’s policies state that “products that make health claims that have not been approved or verified” by regulatory bodies are prohibited from using its service. Read more...

Posted: 22 Mar 2019 08:40 AM PDT

How did we go from viewing computer programming as "women’s work" to peak tech bro culture? In the world of tech today, men greatly outnumber women, and the reasons for this inequality are to be found in stereotypes and biases deeply ingrained in our culture.

But some of the world’s biggest tech companies are taking steps to try and change the gender imbalance. We talked to Rachel Burton, HR Director for the EMEA Engineering teams at Facebook, to learn more about the company's approach. Read more...

How to create your own Alexa skills via Blueprints

Posted: 22 Mar 2019 08:23 AM PDT

You've probably used your Amazon Echo for a variety of tasks and skills, from listening to music and playing games to finding information and controlling smart home devices. But what if you could create your own Alexa skills? You can, thanks to a feature called Alexa Blueprints. You can use templates to create your own stories and games, or concoct personalized answers to specific questions. No programming skills necessary.

After completing your custom skills, you have the option to limit them to just your own household so only you and your family can access them, or you can share them with the world. Amazon now allows you to share your skills with certain people or publish them to the US Alexa Skills store for anyone to use. The process isn't that difficult, though it does entail several steps. Let's check it out. Read more...

United Airlines just made booking easier for trans and non-binary customers

Posted: 22 Mar 2019 08:14 AM PDT

Something as simple as booking a flight can be painful if you identify as trans.

On Tuesday, United Airlines announced that they would be changing their booking options to be more trans-inclusive. Instead of forcing their customers to choose between male or female as gender options when booking, customers can now also select U (undisclosed) or X (unspecified), corresponding with whatever it says on their identification. Customers can also select "Mx." in lieu of Ms., Mrs., or Mr. when booking and in their customer profiles.

Get a better grip with a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller — now on sale at Amazon

Posted: 22 Mar 2019 07:48 AM PDT

We can all agree that the Nintendo Switch is awesome — there’s just one issue with it, though: The system's included JoyCons can get extremely uncomfortable. If your hands are on the larger side, the JoyCons can feel small and almost impossible to use (especially when playing games that require speed and accuracy). Well, Nintendo heard the complaints, and developed the Switch Pro Controller in response.

You can grab one of these Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers for $13 off on Amazon right now — check it out and increase your one-on-one time with your Nintendo Switch.

By significantly cutting down on discomfort, the Nintendo Pro Controller is able to improve your overall stamina and gameplay performance — say goodbye to those hand cramps. The controller doesn’t sacrifice the best features of its predecessor, though, so don’t worry about an unfair tradeoff. HD Rumble, motion controls, and built-in amiibo support are still here, and it’s all completely wireless (charged via USB-C cable — which is included in the package). The Pro Controller is supported in both docked and undocked mode, so you can seamlessly switch between options while you’re going through your next replay of Read more...

The 9 best flower delivery services for Mother's Day in 2019

Posted: 22 Mar 2019 07:08 AM PDT

Mother's Day is a great occasion for a number of reasons. It gives us a helpful little push to shower our mums with the love they deserve, and reminds our mums that we care. It's also a great excuse to get the family together, although whether that's really a positive is up to you.

There is a certain element of stress surrounding Mother's Day though, as you need to come up with some sort of present. Your mum might be super easy to buy for, but traditionally, mums can be a bit of a challenge. There are usually a few avenues you can go down, revolving around jewellery, chocolates, or something for the garden like a nice, sturdy pot. Trust us, mums love pots. We don't know why but they do. Get an exclusive saving of over £100 on the TunnelBear 2‑year VPN plan

Posted: 22 Mar 2019 06:59 AM PDT

There are a lot of VPN services out there, and they all work hard to keep your data protected, your activity anonymous, and the internet unrestricted. They don't all have a massive bear as their mascot though, and that's an important thing to consider.

TunnelBear is the only VPN service that has a website littered with both cute and angry bears. There's absolutely no competition when it comes to how many bears each VPN service has. TunnelBear is the clear winner. It also offers unlimited data, tunnelling on any of five computers or mobile devices simultaneously, around the clock private browsing, and blocking of website trackers. And bears — don't forget the bears. Read more...

Hillary Clinton replied to AOC's take down of Jared Kushner and we all need a minute

Posted: 22 Mar 2019 05:48 AM PDT

Brace yourself: AOC and Hillary Clinton have joined forces on Twitter to create a clapback so powerful that you may need to take a some deep breaths to compose yourself.

It went down on Thursday night, when Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted a very straightforward "But his WhatsApp," after it was alleged that Jared Kushner had been communicating with foreign officials using WhatsApp.

But his WhatsApp

— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) March 22, 2019

Kushner's behavior is obviously problematic on any number of levels, not least of which is that his father-in-law, President Donald Trump, ran his campaign against Hillary Clinton almost exclusively on the charge that she'd used a private email server while she was secretary of stateLock her up, etc.  Read more...

Julia Louis-Dreyfus turns the air blue talking about 'Veep' and its impact on her, um, vocabulary

Posted: 22 Mar 2019 04:25 AM PDT

Anyone who's ever watched an episode of Veep will know that it's absolutely riddled with deliciously foul language.

And it appears that Selina Meyer's love of swearing has rubbed off on Julia Louis-Dreyfus in real life.

"We use really intensely foul language on Veep, there's a lot of swearing and I've gotten quite used to that," Louis-Dreyfus told Seth Meyers. "I've gotten very used to using that language and I have to check myself because most people, of course, aren't used to that.

"So, I'm like, you know, 'Can I have some more of that motherfucking, cock-sucking maple syrup?'"

I think the air just turned blue.

Amy Poehler would be totally up for a 'Parks and Recreation' revival

Posted: 22 Mar 2019 03:49 AM PDT

We may now know the reason why a Parks and Recreation revival is yet to happen — and the issue doesn't appear to be the willingness of certain cast members.

The problem may be that the show's co-creator Mike Schur is just too damn busy.

"Mike Schur is currently working on about five shows," Amy Poehler (aka Leslie Knope), told Variety on the carpet for Thursday night's Parks and Recreation 10th anniversary reunion event.

The good news? She definitely didn't rule out the possibility of a return, once Schur has a bit more time on his hands. Read more...

'PEN15' is a hilariously painful reminder that middle school mattered

Posted: 22 Mar 2019 03:00 AM PDT

Every once in a while, social media is swarmed by people participating in 10 year challenges, where people dig up photos of themselves from a decade ago and juxtapose them with a more recent picture. These challenges are meant to show how much time has changed someone, but to be real — they're really just a flex on how much hotter people are now than when they were teenagers.

10 year challenges often start conversations about how wild fashion was back then, why anyone thought a then-trendy haircut looked good, or how everyone has puberty to thank for erasing the humiliating forms of their younger selves. The "after" picture exists as a thank you, or perhaps a thank god, that the acne and bad jeans of the past don't exist anymore.  Read more...

Seasonal Reese's are better than Reese's Peanut Butter Cups

Posted: 22 Mar 2019 02:00 AM PDT

Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are obviously incredible, the envy of their chocolaty peers. But as Easter approaches and we begin to consider our springtime candy lineups (I assume everyone does this), it might be time to admit that specialty Reese's — we'll use the seasonal Reese's Egg as an example — are better.

There are several key differences between Reese's Cups and Reese's Eggs, including size, shape, and the amount of peanut butter within the chocolate shell. Most notably, the cup has ridges and the egg does not.

But Reese's, it turns out, do not need ridges to be the best versions of themselves. In fact, they just need to be shapeless, chunky globs. Read more...

'The Act' offers up true crime at its most heart-wrenchingly exploitative

Posted: 22 Mar 2019 02:00 AM PDT

Warning: Spoilers for The Act lie ahead.

I'm a fan of true crime the same way some people are fans of Halo Top.

After a long day, I'll crack open nearly any true crime account and eat up the terrifying, true-to-life details with a metaphoric spoon. Whether it's a movie, series, or podcast, I live for moment-to-moment reconstructed investigations, retrospective interviews with emotional eyewitnesses, and the big reveal of that one mistake that gets the criminal caught. Put plainly: True crime is very much my thing.

So, you can imagine my surprise when only an hour and a half into The Act, I had an overwhelming urge to turn off the TV —  and then possibly throw up. This is true crime in its most brutal and most transparently self-serving form. Read more...

Europe's first underwater restaurant resembles a shipwrecked monolith

Posted: 22 Mar 2019 01:15 AM PDT

"No swimwear is required for your evening with us," reads this restaurant's dress code.

Located at the southernmost point of Norway's craggy coast, Europe's first underwater restaurant has opened, fittingly dubbed Under. And it's not just a restaurant.

Designed by Norwegian firm Snøhetta, it's a 34-metre rectangular prism slightly submerged five metres under the sea. Seriously, it looks like a modernist shipwreck.

Yep, that's a restaurant.

It's The One Where Monica Returned to Her Old Apartment.

Friends star Courteney Cox posted a nostalgic throwback to the beloved '90s sitcom, taking a stroll outside her character's apartment in New York City.

Announced via Kickstarter, Spike's new movie-related scheme comes across as even more harebrained than its MoviePass precursor. PreShow, as the eventually to-be-released app is called, offers you credits redeemable for movie tickets in exchange for watching roughly 20 minutes worth of ads. And we do mean watching.   Read more...
